  53. PART I

The firmness in her little chin as she nodded tugged at his heartstrings. “Good, girl. Now you need to run as far away from the village as you can, as far away from the fires. Can you do that?” Another nod full of more strength than any child should have.

He kissed her forehead, praying he wasn’t too late to avert what his wife had started with her unnatural flames. And then he ran, fighting off the urge to stop and return to his daughter, especially when he heard her scream penetrate the night. He did, however, turn toward her one last time. “I’m sorry,” he said, and then he ran on. One day he hoped he’d get the chance to explain himself to her, to make her understand.

But right now, his instincts told him there was another soul who needed his help, the words in the book certain in their message: The Divided will soon be brought forth in the form of the most innocent of souls. Above all else, they must be protected. For they will be the ones to save Lostwood from destruction. At the time, such words had meant little to him. But now they seared like lightning strikes through his mind.

…the most innocent of souls…

“Children,” he said aloud as he ran.

For he knew what he would find inside the very first house his wife had set ablaze, the one just ahead, currently entombed in a grave of black flames. A child whose coming that book had foretold. Maybe more than one. The Divided. Five innocent souls, children all, who would one day save them all.

Those who his wife, ensnared in the talons of a dark-winged madness, had decided to kill. …change the cycle…

He hoped he wasn’t too late.

He plunged through the wall of black flames.

A moment later, the world around him exploded.
