- PART I
Then Cintra said, “You were reckless in telling Sunny about the true nature of godsblood, even more reckless in using it in front of her to try to heal Shim, foolish to not end what was left of Seela’s life when you had the chance, and naïve to allow Sinna to save a murderer. Not to mention that, given her reputation, you should have informed me of Sinna’s role the moment you returned to the Rocklands. You will have much to atone for when you leave again. I’m sorry you won’t have more time with your father.”
Soraya’s head felt heavy. Her heart felt as though it had descended to her toes. “Yes, Sightless. You are right. I know I failed you in many regards on my first mission. I know I failed Narcissi. I will pack up my things and be gone before dawn.”
“Be gone?” Cintra said.
Finally, Soraya dared to meet the woman’s eyes, which were clouded with confusion rather than the stern expression she’d expected. “I’m being exiled, aren’t I? Otherwise why would I be allowed to climb Narcissi and drink Her purest godsblood? This is my farewell gift, is it not?”
“Exiled? Where did you get that idea? Let me guess, Sinna has been filling your head with rubbish. She was always good at spinning such stories. She would’ve made a good spider in another life.”
The way Cintra’s golden eyes sparkled made Soraya feel at ease. “But if you’re not going to exile me, then why did you say I must leave? Why did you apologize?”
“Because normally a Guardian has a chance to catch their breath before their next mission. Your father has missed you dearly. I thought he’d go mad the way he waited for you every day, filling vials with godsblood that didn’t need to be filled given our current supplies.” The image of her father when she’d first spotted him returned to her mind. She didn’t realize he’d been doing that every day, waiting for her.
“My next mission?” Soraya said, as though she was unable to believe what her ears had already told her.
