Which left them…where…exactly? Soraya’s Ability to see into its memory was of no use in combat, nor was she in a position to perform it again either. She was about to suggest running again, as fruitless as it had proven to be the last time, when she spotted something small and furry creeping out from the undergrowth directly behind the monster.
Morg, no! she thought desperately, not wanting to speak the warning aloud for fear that she would only alert the predator to her friend’s presence. Which meant she could only grind her teeth and watch as the chipmunk-like creature drew closer and closer to the bear, which seemed content to stalk forward slowly now, as though drawing out the kill for sport.
Finally, Morg stopped, and Soraya realized it was never aiming to catch up to the bear. Uh oh, she thought, just as Morg’s tiny mouth dipped toward the ground. Toward a small circle of glowing godsblood that had pooled in a fist-sized depression. And then it drank, eyes closing from the sheer pleasure.
Soraya understood that feeling, as all of the Forsworn had the blessing of partaking of Narcissi’s blood on a regular basis. In no time at all, Morg had drained the pool, which was enough of the liquid to kill a human. But Morg was no human, and the godsblood had a very different effect on him.
His eyes flashed open, as bright as twin suns. They brightened the clearing, finally offering the bear a warning that something was amiss. Not that it mattered, for Morg had started to grow almost immediately, his chest swelling, his arms and legs thickening and elongating, heavy cords of muscle twisting and writhing beneath his fur and skin. His tail lost its fluffiness and grew barbed spikes to rival a dragon. And his features, normally as cute as an infant’s, became the thing of nightmares, his mouth taking up half his face and filled with daggerlike teeth.
The bear roared as it turned, while Morg released a snakelike hiss and a growl of “MORG!” a hundred times louder than his usual voice, which was as cute and adorable as a kitten’s mewl, before striking with the speed of a viper. As the two monstrous creatures came together, Soraya knew true fear for the first time in her sixteen years of life, for Morg was more than just a friend to her. He was like her child, a son raised from when he was but a juvenile who’d inadvertently drunk godsblood without knowing the grave consequences.
