- PART I
She looked up, ready to face whatever new threat had chosen this moment to add to her extensive list of troubles. Instead, she found herself gazing up at a woman of exceptional beauty, her white hair like gossamer threads spilling down her shoulders, her face so perfectly shaped it might’ve been painted onto a canvas. Even more awe-inspiring than her beauty were the gold-leaf markings on her face, for there were hundreds. The only other person she’d ever seen with more was Cintra herself, and that was no fair contest for anyone. The woman sat easily on a tree branch twenty or so feet up, as though her perch was the most comfortable chair that had ever been shaped by a carpenter. How Morg, with his heightened animal senses, hadn’t known the woman was there, escaped all logic and understanding.
But then, to Soraya’s shock and horror, the woman shoved off, pushing herself into empty air. She fell. Well, ‘fell’ was probably the wrong word. More like lowered herself, her feet moving ever downward as though descending an invisible flight of stairs only she could see. When the woman reached the ground, Soraya swore her feet remained an inch or two off the forest floor.
Morg didn’t so much as stir as Soraya scooped him up and deposited him in her satchel before clambering to her feet, prepared to fight or run or do whatever the situation called for. The woman was only a few feet away but made no move to attack or draw nearer.
If anything, seeing her up close only made her appearance all the more breathtaking, especially that mask of golden leaves. “You’re a…,” she said, searching for the right word, but none of the ones that flashed through her mind felt appropriate. Guardian or Protector felt far too mundane, despite how proud she’d always been to wear those titles. Sightless made more sense, but that was impossible. It wasn’t like there were so many Forsworn that Soraya couldn’t keep track of them. She knew every one of them by sight and name. And this white-haired woman most certainly wasn’t one of the Forsworn.
Not anymore, she realized, her lips parting as her mind revealed the truth to her.
The woman smiled, her amusement seemingly genuine. “You know who I am, don’t you?”
