- PART I
“I’ve never left the Rocklands before. At least not that I can remember. I was a young girl when my father brought us here from Kingfall.”
“Of course you haven’t. None of the Protectors have. But now you’re a Guardian, so you might as well get used to it. Most of our work is outside of the Rocklands these days.”
That familiar thrill shivered up her spine, the same thrill she’d felt when Cintra had announced her promotion to Guardian. That had been but a week ago, and now here she was on her first mission. She wondered if this was how it felt to be sucked up by a tornado and flung about.
She stood, took a deep breath, and started after her partner, who’d been a Guardian for decades. To him, this was just another day, while to her it was the turning of the page onto a new chapter in her life. No, she thought. This is a whole new book.
“Can we have a moment?” a new voice said, one as familiar to her as her own.
“Of course,” Shim said. “I’ll wait for her on the other side.”
“Father…,” Soraya said, turning. “I told you I didn’t want to make a big fuss about this.”
He smiled fondly. “You did, but I’m your father and I won’t let a monumental moment in my daughter’s life pass by without a bit of fanfare. I couldn’t be prouder of you. Roach would’ve been so proud too.”
Staring into the slightly-less-golden eyes of her father, Soraya felt a swell of emotion threatening to overflow. She had only the vaguest of memories of the creature he’d once been—something scaled and clawed, scarred and fanged—before Narcissi’s blood had wrought changes in him, transforming him into something closer to the form he was always meant to have. With his sun-bronzed skin, flowing mane of white hair, and sculpted physique, he might’ve been a god himself. His name—Lerg—felt like an affront to the man he’d become. And yet…there were still signs of the creature that had been one of the Thousands, as they’d been called. His back-bent knees. The twin humps protruding from his back where mangled wings used to dangle. A small patch of scales just under his left eye. No one knew if enough doses of godsblood would erase these strange features as well, but Soraya didn’t care one way or another. He was simply her father, and she’d love him no matter what form he assumed. “This is why I didn’t want to do this,” she muttered, dashing away tears as his arms surrounded her.
