  41. ABOUT THE AUTHOR

“They need to stay off for now,” Avery said. “Doctor’s orders. The darkness will help prevent the headaches.”

She tried to sit up, and her effort was rewarded by a sharp jab inside her skull. The pain took her breath away, and she immediately eased back against the pillows. “Fair enough.”

“Your body needs time to heal.”

“It needs to heal fast,” she said. “I’ve never been good with lying around.”

Avery rested a steadying hand on her arm again. “Sometimes you have to surrender, Jordan. Sometimes patience is all that works.”

“This isn’t a counseling session, is it?”

She chuckled. “Sorry, I’ve been to so many the mantras come naturally.”

“Can you get a doctor in here to see me?” Jordan asked. “I want a debriefing.”

“That’ll come in the morning when the doctors make rotations. And they’re doing another MRI,” Avery said.

“Why?” Jordan demanded.

“They want to confirm the swelling is going down,” Avery said. “And you have a dozen stitches in the back of your head that need checking.”

Stitches in the back of her head. “And when they do, can I get out of here?” she asked.

Avery drew in a breath. “Of course.”

“What aren’t you telling me?” she asked.

“Nothing,” Avery said.

Jordan might not be able to see her expression, but she had known Avery long enough to recognize when she was lying.

CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Friday, April 16

9:00 a.m.

Jordan was about to lose it.

The nurses were insisting that her room stay totally dark. There had been a second MRI, and this go-around, she was not as dazed. She was fully awake and very aware that the tube the technicians had put her in was like a coffin. Suffocating.

Now she was back in her room. She had sent Avery home. Told her to shower and eat. Her sister needed a break, and so did Jordan. She required all her energy to brace for what the doctors were going to tell her, and putting on a brave face for Avery might just be too much.

There was a knock on her door, and she sat up. Automatically, she ran fingers through her hair to flatten out some of the tangles, but her fingers brushed the white gauze that wrapped around her head.

“Come in.” The shadow that entered the room was tall, broad shouldered, and bore a familiar scent. “Ranger Spencer.”

“That’s right,” he said carefully. “Doc said I need to keep the light off.”

She sat a little taller. “That’s what they’re telling me. I should get the rundown on my status any minute.”

“I can leave.”

“No, I’d rather you stay. Distract me. Tell me about the crime scene.” Self-conscious, she wondered what she looked like. She wanted to appear professional but knew hospital gowns made the strongest look weak.

A chair pulled up beside her bed. “You sure you want to hear about it?”
