  41. ABOUT THE AUTHOR

“No.” She looked up as if trying to control her emotions. “I thought I was going to die, and then you appeared out of nowhere. Why did you come looking for me?”

“I was worried. You were so angry when you ran off, and I felt terrible.”

Questions could trigger bad memories, and normally she shied away from the past with Avery. But given the two dead Jane Does, looking back was necessary. Jordan sat quiet, trying once again not to imagine what had happened before she had arrived. “It’s in the past.”

“Yeah,” Avery said. “The past.”

Jordan had spent the next two hours cutting the grass, edging the yard, and digging up several plants killed by drought. Next, she had worked out for more than an hour. After a hot shower, she had fallen into bed, her body exhausted. Avery had asked to stay the night, and Jordan had readily agreed. Her sister was in her old room, sleeping. Safe and sound.

This should have been a night when Jordan slept well and hard. Instead, she stared into the darkness, worrying over her sister’s safety and wondering if it really was wise for Avery to ask questions on the street about Tammy. They both knew the world where Tammy and Walker lived was dangerous and full of traps to trip her up.

Then she reminded herself that Avery looked good, and she was thinking about the future. She wanted to help, and she was here. Both were firsts.

But Jordan’s mind would not turn off. This case amounted to dozens of puzzle pieces that had yet to form a clear picture.

Jordan shifted to her side, punched her pillow, and then rolled on her back.

Instead of counting sheep, she inventoried her puzzle pieces. The two corner pieces were the two Jane Does, each kidnapped, sexually assaulted, and suffocated. The other pieces were drug issues. Each, like Avery, had a history of drug use and had lived or worked in Marco Walker’s territory. These fragments might not fill in the center of the entire picture, but right now they felt like they belonged somewhere.

It made sense to pay a visit to Marco Walker. She could confirm he had not jumped bail. And if she could keep her cool, she could ask about the missing women, who shared too many similarities with Avery, and maybe find out why the hell he had tied her sister up two years ago.

Maybe if she could keep her cool. Controlling her temper with Walker was a big damn ask right now.
