  41. ABOUT THE AUTHOR

A quick knock at the door and Jordan rose. The missing uniformed officer entered. He was scowling, his hand on his weapon until he saw Jordan’s badge. She introduced herself, told him about Ms. Stone’s bag of belongings, and asked him to keep them secure until the forensic team arrived.

“I’ll be leaving soon,” the officer said. “I’m only authorized to be here until you arrived.”

“Fair enough.” When she turned to tell Ms. Stone she might return, the woman was already asleep. “Has anyone visited Ms. Stone?”

“Her lawyer. A Mr. Harold Sunday. And because she was an overdose, the hospital drug counselor, Dr. Malone.”

Malone made sense, but Sunday would not waste his time on someone like Ms. Stone unless she had a pot of money or had information he wanted. “Harold Sunday? You sure about that?”

“Very.”

“Thanks.”

Out in the hallway she informed the front desk of what was happening regarding their patient’s belongings and headed to the elevator. She was tempted to leave immediately. Christ, she hated hospitals.

She owed Rogan Malone a visit. Despite their failed romance, he had spoken to her witness and needed to be interviewed. On the elevator, she hit the button for the sixth floor, the psychiatric unit. Like it or not, the past was reaching out of the shadows yet again.

CHAPTER NINE

Wednesday, April 14

12:00 p.m.

Jordan moved down the familiar hallway to the office door at the end. The nameplate read DR. R. MALONE. There was no IN SESSION sign displayed, so she knocked.

“Enter.”

She pushed open the door and found Dr. Rogan Malone behind his desk, his head bent, his brow furrowing as he stared at a stack of forms. “Still hate the paperwork?”

His scowl dissolving, he looked up and rose. “Jordan, it’s been a while.”

She moved into the space. There was not anything remarkable about Rogan Malone’s office. Laminated wood shelves were crammed full of books, the oriental carpet’s loose weave was worn, the couch could be lumpy in several spots, and the window overlooked the parking lot. It always smelled faintly of cigarettes, though Rogan denied he smoked.

But this was the space she had run to when Avery’s problems had gotten out of hand. She had been desperate to save her sister and deal with the growing panic that had tightened her chest like a vise. In this space, the troubled world had vanished long enough for her to see the solutions.

But that was before Jordan and Rogan had slept together. Since then, she had not been here and was surprised to discover the office still soothed her nerves, even if his presence did not.

He came around the desk and gave her a hug. The familiar scent of his soap, even the cigarettes, eased the edginess that had been coiling inside her since she had seen the first Jane Doe.
