  41. ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Tears welled in her eyes, and she was glad for the Darth Vader glasses, which offered her some cover. She felt as if she were drowning. And an old familiar knot fisted in her chest. She pulled in a deep breath and slowly released it. Words like transitions, therapy, conditions brought with them a future she did not want.

CHAPTER NINETEEN

Wednesday, April 21

9:45 a.m.

Spencer stood back from the crowd dispersing from the hospital. He, along with the others, had been here to watch Detective Poe make her victorious exit, and while the crowd of officers cheered, he had watched. There were cases when the perpetrator returned to the scene of the crime. Some visited their victims’ homes or called loved ones, inquiring about their status.

And it stood to reason that this killer, if he had gone out of his way to set up Jordan, would linger and be present when she left. He would want to see how she was doing. Confirm the swirling rumors that she had lost some or all of her vision. He would want to know.

No one stuck out in his mind as odd, but he had two officers recording the scene so that later he could go back and study it more closely.

Captain Lee approached Spencer. “That went as well as could be expected.”

“If you say so.” Spencer did not need to ask how Jordan was faring. Her unnaturally happy smile had said it all. “A few days at home with nothing but this case to chew on is going to have an impact.”

Captain Lee drew in a deep breath. “You’re saying she’ll be in your office sooner rather than later.”

“If the shoe were on the other foot, I’d do the same. And I do want to talk to her. We need to deconstruct what she saw in that house before she was attacked.”

“Any word on Casey Andrews?”

“Nothing. I’ve also been in contact with Detective Rivers again and asked her to extend her search back a decade and to widen her search area. I want to know if any other women matching this killer’s profile disappeared.”

“You think there could be more?”

“This killer has honed his routine. His method of killing is highly unique, which I would argue he has perfected over time. I would bet his victim type has not changed that much. Many killers like him have specific preferences.”

Spencer’s phone rang. “Excuse me. It’s Dr. McIntyre.”

“By all means. She’s the lady with the answers.”

“Let’s hope.” He accepted the call. “Doc.”

“Agent Spencer, I have a toxicological report back on Marco Walker.”

“And?”

“There were so many drugs in his system it would have been darn near impossible for him to stand up, let alone hook a noose, climb up a chair, and hang himself,” Dr. McIntyre said.

“Are you sure?”
