  41. ABOUT THE AUTHOR

“I’m getting pressure to hold a press conference,” Captain Lee said.

“Who’s pressing this?”

“The mayor. Several local media outlets want a statement. The bodies were found in two areas marked for urban renewal. Turns out the same guy has the contract to renovate both sites. He feels like he’s being targeted and has friends in the governor’s office.”

“I believe Detective Poe spoke to the site manager, Manny Bennett. What’s the developer’s name?”

“Michael King,” Captain Lee said.

King had been touted in the press often in recent weeks for his energy-efficient new houses and buildings. “I’d like to talk to him.”

“I already have,” Captain Lee said. “He has no idea why his properties have been singled out.”

“Still, I want to talk to him,” Spencer said.

“Let me put this bluntly. King has influential friends, and you and Detective Poe do not have reputations for tact.”

Spencer looked back toward Detective Poe and caught her staring at him. She did not look away. “We’ll play nice. Sir.”

“First the news conference. Then you can talk to King.”

Politics was a fact of life. In his younger days he’d bucked when faced with it, but now he saved his energy for the fights that mattered. And politics could be useful if handled correctly. “When?”

“Two hours. And Detective Poe needs to be there. I want this to look like a partnership between the Rangers and Austin Police. We need a show of unity.”

“Where?” Spencer asked.

“Austin Police Department’s conference room. The public information officer is setting it up now.”

“There’s still not much to say,” Spencer said.

“I understand. But the image of you two standing side by side will be a visual sign of accord.”

“Sure.” He hung up and crossed back to Detective Poe, who he already had guessed ranked cooperation low on her priority list. “Your boss wants a press conference.”

“Why?” she asked.

“Bodies were found at sites being developed by the same man. Press is ready to tell the city we have a serial killer in Austin.”

She arched a brow. “So, we go make nice and play a little politics.”

“Can you do that?” he asked.

A small smile tugged the edges of her lips. “I guess we’ll find out.”

CHAPTER SIX

Tuesday, April 13

1:00 p.m.

When Jordan returned to her desk, the missing person files were waiting for her. She sank into her chair, shifted her sunglasses to the top of her head, and slurped the remains of a soda from a drive-through meal.
