- ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Jordan rushed toward her, rolled her on her back, and found herself staring into her sister’s vacant eyes. Tucking the gun in her waistband, Jordan removed the gag tied around Avery’s head.
Avery’s eyes were wide, her pupils dilated, and she was choking. Jordan arched Avery’s neck, opened her mouth, and checked her airway. She swiped her finger inside Avery’s mouth and felt plastic. She reached in deeper, grabbed the foreign object with her fingertips, and pulled it out.
Avery sucked in a full breath, her chest rising and falling.
Jordan’s hands trembled as she raised her sister to a sitting position. “Avery!”
Avery coughed, and when she focused on Jordan’s face, tears welled and spilled down her cheeks. “I’m sorry.”
“I know. I know. I’ll call an ambulance.”
“No, please. Just get me out of here.”
“Who put the plastic down your throat?” Jordan struggled to contain her anger. Her sister needed help, and someone had taken advantage of her weakness.
“I don’t know.” Her voice sounded hoarse, scratched.
“Did Walker do it?”
“I don’t know. Maybe. Maybe a friend of his.”
“Did you get any names?”
“No,” she cried. “I just remember Walker handing me the needle and tying me up. I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.”
Jordan pulled Avery into an embrace. “Okay. It’s okay.”
Avery’s body shuddered with sobs as she gripped the sleeves of Jordan’s T-shirt. “I’ll never do this again.”
“I know. I know.”
This latest setback hit Jordan hard. She thought about what it would cost for another stint in rehab. And then the endless days of wondering whether Avery had used again.
But Jordan would do what she had done since their mother died. She would put one foot in front of the other and find a way forward out of the darkness.

CHAPTER THREE
Monday, April 12
8:00 a.m.
Jordan arrived at the police station. She considered stopping in the break room for more coffee, but when she heard the collection of cops talking, she moved directly to her cubicle. A string of sleepless nights had left her in no mood for conversation.
Nearly two weeks after the female body had been found in the abandoned house, it had not yet been identified. That was not surprising. There were a lot of Jane Does in the world who never ended up reclaiming their real names. But the Jane Doe wrapped in plastic continued to bother Jordan. She had had too many nights since when she’d woken up, overcome by a suffocating sensation.
