  41. ABOUT THE AUTHOR

“Not sure what it says about me, but I would like nothing better.” She held up a hand. “Skip the part about me rushing in alone. No lectures.”

“None to give.”

She arched a brow. “Really? You sure about that?”

“I’m too busy kicking myself for not being faster. What happened?”

“The details are still foggy.”

“Tell me what you know.”

A smile tugged her lips. “You’re being too nice.”

“Am I?” No hints of amusement in his tone.

“I figured you would read me the riot act,” she said.

“I still might. For now, tell me what you remember. Start with the call from Casey Andrews.”

“Did you find her in time? Were you able to save her?”

“No,” he said. “The killer removed her from the plastic and took her.”

“Took her?” Jordan shifted her body toward the sound of his deep voice.

“We found you on the floor beside the plastic. Casey Andrews’s DNA and fingerprints were on the plastic.”

“So, she really did call me.”

“Sounds like you’re doubting yourself.”

“Too much time and too many drugs pumped into my system. A few times I couldn’t tell you what year it was.”

“Your mind is not playing tricks. Casey did call you.”

The fact primed the pump, and more details rose to the surface. “Her mother told me she had two phones. She called me on the burner.”

“What did she say?”

“She told me she was in trouble. That she needed my help. How did I find her?”

“Find a Friend. She accepted your request to track her.”

His words primed more memories. “I wanted to break the case, but I wasn’t going to approach the house until you or the deputies arrived. But all the lights were on in the house, and I had a bad feeling about it.” Faint memories of Casey wrapped in plastic emerged through the fog. “I heard several thud sounds. I saw her wrapped up.”

“And waiting for me would have been a death sentence for her.”

“That’s what I thought.”

“I would have done the same.”

“You said he took Casey,” Jordan said. “Did he kill her and dump her body somewhere else?”

“We haven’t found her yet.”

“You didn’t see him?”

“I saw you lying on the floor, and that was enough to stop me in my tracks.”

“I wish you’d pursued him.”

He cleared his throat. “I made the right call.”

“What did you find at the scene?”

“The forensic team is still sorting through the evidence. We did identify Jane Doe #2.”

“Tammy Fox?”

“Correct.”

“Victim #1 is still pending,” she said.

“Correct. Did you see anything? Hear anything?” he asked.
