  41. ABOUT THE AUTHOR

“I was flying high when I left. I had to leave early for work.” Her eyes widened as if she remembered she had a job. “I think I’m late for work now.”

“You’re not in any shape today to go.”

“I have to call. Where’s my phone?”

Jordan slipped on gloves and rummaged through a nightstand, where she found an unused Bible. She then moved to the closet, where she discovered Ms. Stone’s phone bundled in a plastic bag along with a thin dress, necklace, bracelet, and hoop earrings. “I’ll call your work for you. Just give me the name.”

Ms. Stone mumbled a number and Jordan called it. The manager of a fast-food joint answered, and Jordan explained the situation. The man on the other end did not sound happy but accepted the explanation.

“All clear, Ms. Stone.”

The woman relaxed back against the pillows.

“Ms. Stone, I need you to tell me more about the second man.”

“I don’t know shit about him. Seriously.”

“Can I look at your photos on your phone?” Jordan asked.

“Sure.”

Jordan opened the photos app. There were several pictures of Ms. Stone and Walker taken last night. The final image provided a glimpse of the second man, but his face was turned, and he was wearing a ball cap. He appeared to be midsize with dark hair, which fit the description Ms. Stone had given. She wondered whether surveillance cameras in the area of Walker’s apartment had recorded a blue pickup truck. “Can I forward these pictures to my phone?”

“What? Why?”

“They’re images of a crime scene.”

“Sure.”

Jordan sent the images to her phone. “Ms. Stone, I’m contacting my forensic department, and I’m going to have them send a tech to collect your phone.”

“Why?”

“They might need to look it over.”

“Why?”

“You were the last person who saw Mr. Walker alive.”

Ms. Stone moistened her lips. “But I didn’t do that to him.”

“Do you have a pimp? Was the second man your pimp?”

She looked away. “No.”

“You sure about that?”

“I’m solo now.”

“Do you have a boyfriend? Someone who might not like you with Walker?”

“No. It was just Marco and me having fun. And then creepy new guy.”

“Did Mr. Walker make any comments about killing himself?”

“No, he was riding high. Happy. Was glad to get the money. Said he could supply more.” Her eyes drifted closed.

Jordan clapped her hands again. “Ms. Stone, how did the second man and Mr. Walker get along?”

“Fine, I guess.”

“What does fine mean?”

“They weren’t yelling. But not exactly friends.”

“But they knew each other?”

“Yes. The other guy reminded Walker that he still owed him.”

“Who owed who?”

“Walker owed the guy.”

“Money?”

“I guess.”
