I stepped out of my shower and started to towel off. I bent as best I could to dry my legs, but when I stood up, my inner thighs were soaked again. What the hell? I dried them once more, but again I felt the wetness dripping down my legs.

Alrighty then. Here we go.

Stuffing my towel between my legs, I waddled into my closet for some clothes. I put a thick feminine pad in my underwear and dressed calmly before combing my hair and pulling it into a ponytail.

Going into the bedroom where Evan was sitting up against the light pine headboard with a book in his hands, I announced, “Evan, my water broke when I was getting out of the shower.”

“Like a pipe busted?” he asked, not even looking up from the spy novel he was reading.

“No, like my amniotic sac busted,” I said with a laugh.

“Your amni— oh my God! The baby! She’s… oh my God! Fuck! Oh, sorry. Shit! Sorry.” He had jumped off the bed and was turning in circles, waving his hands around.

I tried hard not to laugh as I walked over to him and put my hand on his shoulder. “Ev, calm down. It’s fine. I’m not even feeling any contractions yet. Just grab my suitcase for me, okay?”

“Okay, suitcase. Right. Oh, fuck! Sorry about that. I’m just nervous.”

I couldn’t help my laughter at him trying not to cuss in front of me. “Trust me, I’ve heard it all. Hell, I’ve said it all.” Evan grabbed my jacket from the closet and wrapped it around my shoulders, trying to get my arms into the holes. He had the damn thing so twisted around me that I couldn’t find the armholes. “Let me handle the jacket. I’ll meet you downstairs,” I said, disentangling myself and folding it over one arm.

Evan grabbed my small floral suitcase and started to follow me from our bedroom when I turned and looked him up and down. “Um, Evan? You might want to put some pants on.”

He looked down at his pajama-clad legs and cursed and apologized again. “Okay, good call. I’m going to put pants on. Can you get down the stairs by yourself?”

I took him by the shoulders and shook him a little. His warm brown eyes met mine with a look that told me he was overwhelmed, even if I hadn’t noticed his fingers tapping nervously against his left leg. “Evan, it’s fine. I’m fine. The baby is fine. Calm down, get dressed, and come downstairs.”
