I chuckled. “Yeah, he’s a friggin’ vault.” I placed my hand over his on my knee. “He could see how devoted you are to me and how excited you are about the baby, and I think that… I don’t know… eased his mind, I guess. That and the fact that you’re not banging his sister.”
Evan snorted out a laugh. “We’re probably the only couple in history to sleep in separate bedrooms on their honeymoon,” he said, referring to the luxurious two-bedroom suite we’d stayed in on the island. Then his face turned serious. “I’ll always take care of you and Carrie,” he said, lifting his hand and brushing his knuckles gently across the slight swell of my belly, which was barely hidden by my loose, linen dress.
We discussed baby names while we were on our island vacation, and I really loved how Carrie Cavanaugh sounded. Evan had agreed, and voilà! Our baby had a name.
“Thanks, dear,” I said, tilting my head over to his shoulder, my mouth stretching into a wide yawn.
“Get some sleep, hon,” he said, tenderly kissing my forehead. “We’ve got a long flight ahead of us.” I was grateful as I let the weight of my eyelids pull them closed. All the pregnancy books were right. Making a human made you sleepy as fuck.
Almost eight hours later, Evan was shaking my shoulder to wake me up. “We’re home, sleepyhead,” he teased, and I blinked my bleary eyes and lifted my head, feeling moisture on the side of my face.
I jerked my head up in horror. “Shit, Evan. Why didn’t you wake me up and tell me I was drooling,” I fussed, pulling a tissue from my purse and swiping ineffectively at the wet spot on his soft blue polo shirt.
“What kind of husband would I be if I did that? It’s no big deal, sweetheart.”
God, this man was sweet. I’d slobbered all over my fake husband for hours, and he was all, no big deal.
Forty minutes later, we were in the elevator of Evan’s—no, our—apartment. “You’re still okay with us sharing a bedroom?” he asked, his brown eyes holding mine intently.
“Yeah, I’m good,” I said, nodding with a fervor that I didn’t feel. Shit, this was going to be awkward. I hadn’t slept in a bed with a man since Axel, and the simple thought of my ex seemed to slide down my body like liquid dripping down the walls of a cave, seeping right through my skin and into my placenta. Carrie kicked. Hard. And then again.
Placing my hand over my belly, I circled it in smooth little soothing motions. I know, darling girl. I miss him, too.
