Oliver looked at me with concern. “Yeah, sure. Just let me grab my shoes.” He returned a minute later with his keys in his hand and drove us to the nearest bar. We found a quiet table in the back, and Oliver went to the bar to grab us a couple of draft beers. He came back to find me with my hands clasped so tightly together my knuckles were white and my right leg bouncing like a jackrabbit. “Dude, you’re as jumpy as a frog on meth. What’s going on?”

“I saw Blaire.”

He took a long drink of his beer and said, “Now I understand the twitchiness. What happened?”

I ran down the story about how she had gone to med school in San Diego instead of Harvard and how she was an orthopedic resident working with our team now. “I saw her for the first time last weekend at a reception thing. She was with her husband.”

Oliver stopped his mug halfway to his mouth. “Husband?” I nodded. He put his glass down on the scarred wooden table and looked at me sympathetically. “I’m sorry, Ax.”

I held up one finger and said, “But…”

“No. No buts,” Ollie said, shaking his head. “That’s not cool, Axel Broxton, and you know it.”

“Just hear me out,” I said, and my brother rolled his eyes. “He’s cheating on her.”

Oliver leveled his gaze at me and flattened his lips into a thin, disapproving line. “How could you possibly know that?”

I guzzled about half of my beer before continuing. “A guy from the team said Evan… that’s Blaire’s husband… dated his cousin this summer.”

“Fuck me.” Oliver pinched the bridge of his nose and shook his head.

“He’s cheating on Blaire!” I said, banging my fist on the table angrily, causing a group of men two tables away to look over curiously before going back to their beer.

Leaning forward, my brother fixed me with a critical scowl. “And why do you think this is any of your damned business? You told me you were over her.”

I put my elbow on the table and flung my forehead into my hand. “Yeah, about that. I may have told you a little white lie.” I glanced up at his impassive gaze and said, “Okay, maybe it was a huge lie. A total whopper.”

Oliver stared at me incredulously. “You never got over her.” It wasn’t a question, but I shook my head anyway. “Bro, I don’t know what to say. Obviously, you can’t tell her. The whole ‘kill the messenger’ thing, you know?”

“Yeah, I know. But I can’t just let her live a lie. And what’s worse, I think they may have a baby. I overheard a conversation she had about her brother picking up the baby.”

“You know, it could be a dog or something. A lot of people call their pets their babies.”
