“They already did a test, which you weren’t here for, and they said my water hadn’t broken. They’re going to do an ultrasound thing in a few minutes, though, to check on Junior. You can wait in the waiting room for that.” She pointed a manicured finger toward the door.

Her water hadn’t even broken. That was followed by the thought, Blaire was right. Again.

Fuck.

“No, I’d like to see the baby. That will be great, huh?” I asked, patting her arm and trying to be nice.

“I guess. You really don’t have to stay in here, though.” She had been so insistent that I be here, and now she wanted me to leave the room?

“It’s okay. I want to.”

Then she went back into attack mode like a crazed, injured animal. “Why were you so far away? Where were you?” she demanded.

“I was at a hotel with Blaire.” Which you pulled me away from with another false alarm.

“The Hilton isn’t thirty minutes away. What took you so long?” she asked, her haughty, onerous voice grating my nerves.

“We weren’t at the Hilton, Milan. It was another hotel.” You’re trying my patience, woman.

“Oh, so the hotel where you stuck me wasn’t good enough for Miss Perfect Blaire,” she sneered. “Are you always going to treat me like this?”

Good Lord, this woman had some motherfucking nerve. “First of all, the hotel where I stuck you was $800 per night, which you knew because you’re the one who booked it. I’m just the one who paid for it. Second of all, you’re not my girlfriend, and it’s none of your goddamn business where I go with Blaire.”

She sat up on the gurney, her blue eyes blazing with the challenge. “Oh, yes, it is my business when you’re not here for me when I need you. Anything could have happened, and I would have been all alone. Our baby almost died.”

I sighed heavily. “I thought you said everything was okay.”

“Well, it was this time. Why were you in a hotel with her anyway?” Jesus fucking Christ!

“We needed some time alone together,” I said through gritted teeth.

“And you had to go to a hotel for that?” Yes! Because you won’t leave me the fuck alone!

“Again, my sex life is none of your concern, Milan.”

She looked at me like I had kicked her puppy. “So, while you were getting your rocks off, Junior and I were suffering by ourselves.” Actually, I didn’t get my rocks off because you interrupted us—again.

“You hardly seem to be suffering,” I said, my jaw tightening to the point of pain.

“Well, it was very traumatic not being able to get in contact with the father of my baby. From now on, you will have your phone on you at all times in case I need you.”
