“Do we need to pay him a visit?” he asked, his face hard.
“I may take you up on that; I’ll let you know,” I said with a smirk. “Thank you, Bode.”
“Nobody better mess with my girls,” he said, and I gave him a kiss on the cheek. “Carrie was a little upset, but Beau and I promised to take her to the aquarium tomorrow, and that cheered her up.”
“Bode, really? Y’all didn’t have to do that.”
He shook his head. “It’s no biggie. The other guys can handle the office for the day.”
“Where is she now?”
“She’s working out with Beau and Cam. She’s probably kicking both their asses,” he said with a grin. “Come on,” he said, taking my hand. We went into the dojo, and Carrie jumped up and down when she saw me.
“Mommy, I learned a new kick today. Watch me!”
“Okay,” I said, swiping my hand through her sweaty hair, “but we need to go soon because you’re going to need a bath before dinner.”
She showed off her new moves, snapping her leg forward at the knee and kicking Beau’s and Cam’s hands as they knelt in front of her, not missing her target a single time. “Good job, Care Bear. You’re getting better every time I watch you.” She got high fives and kisses from all the uncles before we headed to our apartment.
As we walked through the lobby, Vincent snuck Carrie a red lollipop and handed me a manila envelope. “Some lease papers Mr. Broxton needs to sign,” he explained.
I got Carrie bathed and dressed before changing clothes myself. I stuck my head into her room and found her in the playroom. “Daddy should be here in about five minutes,” I told her.
“Okay, Mommy. I hope he hurries because I’m soooo hungry.” She was always famished after working out with Cam and generally ate what seemed like half her body weight in food.
I went downstairs and opened the envelope Vincent had given me. Axel had mentioned adding my name to the lease, so it was probably just some updated paperwork. I pulled out the pages, startling when I saw the name Milan McVey on the first page. Why had he given me Milan’s lease? I was about to stick the papers back into the envelope, intending to return them to Vincent, when something at the top of the first page caught my eye.
Lessee: Axel Broxton.
