“I know,” I said miserably. “What if I’ve been wrong about him all these years?”
Evan patted my hand soothingly. “Well, that is an awful big bomb to drop on a man. Fortunately for me, I’ve never had to worry about that,” he said with a chuckle. “Benefit of being gay, I guess, no surprise pregnancies.”
“Ax said he called my brother the very next day and talked to him about it, but Beau never told me anything about that conversation.”
“Hmmm. What did he say to Beau?”
“I have no freaking idea. He wouldn’t tell me because he wants me to hear it straight from someone I trust. He told me to ask Beau about it.”
“How much do you trust Axel? I know you still love him, but do you trust him?”
I tilted my head at my husband. “How did you know I still loved Ax?”
“Sweetheart, we share a bedroom. I’ve heard you crying in the shower. And it’s never been the cries of someone who is exhausted from their job or family duties. It was the cry of someone who’s brokenhearted.”
For some reason, I felt ashamed he had heard me crying over another man. “I’m sorry, Ev.”
He laughed. “Don’t apologize. You have no idea how I wish I could be the person who was able to mend your heart by being everything for you.”
“Evan,” I said sincerely. “You have been everything to me… well, except for that. And that’s not your fault. I just don’t have the right equipment for you,” I said with a goofy grin.
He laughed good-naturedly. “My point is that I want you to be happy, Blaire. You’ve been pining for Axel since day one, and if he’s truly been pining for you all these years, then maybe you need to take a chance. But talk to your brother first. I’ve got Carrie,” he said, kissing the back of my hand affectionately.
I jumped up and hugged Evan, smooching him on the cheek. “Thank you, Evan. You’re the best fake husband a girl could ask for.”
He chuckled at that. “Happy to be of service. Oh. Well, not service exactly, but you know what I mean.”
I rolled my eyes with a smirk and practically sprinted into the living room, where I kissed and hugged my little girl. “BaBa is going to feed you and get you ready for bed tonight. Mom has to run out for a little bit,” I told her, smelling her sweet hair before bending for one more kiss. Almost as an afterthought, I grabbed a light pink box out of the closet near the front door. I wasn’t sure if I was going to need it tonight; it would depend on what my sneaky brother told me.
