My phone beeps and I rush to pick it up. Must be Sid, he should be home soon. But it’s not—it’s a message from Ragini.
‘Are you coming to Neelima’s party?’ her message reads.
‘No. Going out with Sid,’ I type and send the response back instantly.
Given how much Ragini hates Neelima, I’m quite surprised she is going for the party. If I didn’t have plans with Sid, I would’ve loved to go to the party as well. I’ve heard Neelima throws really rocking parties.
I check my phone again to see if I might have missed a call or a message from Sid, but there’s nothing. I pick up my towel and the pregnancy test and go in for my shower.
Positive.
I wrap the towel around me tighter and check the pregnancy test again. There are two dark pink lines. The instruction on the packaging says that one line means negative and two lines means positive.
That means I am—I am pregnant. I am pregnant! I put the lid down on the pot and sit on it; and breathe. I am pregnant.
I get up and walk around the bathroom. I do a quick little jig before the bathroom mirror and then clamp my hand over my mouth to stop myself from shouting. I am SO thrilled. I am pregnant! I am going to be a mummy! Oh my god I am going to be a mummy.
I breathe deeply to calm myself and check the pregnancy test again. Yes, the lines are still there, still pink. I am still pregnant. Even though the news is unexpected—and I was completely unprepared for it—I am beyond excited. I grin and wonder who I should call.
I nearly dial Sid’s number—but don’t—I’ll tell him face-to-face. Should I confirm the pregnancy with a doctor before telling Sid? No, Sid should know now, we should know it together; it’s our baby after all. He’s going to love his baby … will he?
I feel a little nervous as I think of his reaction and sit on the bed. What if he’s not ready? We hadn’t planned the baby. I try to think of when I might have conceived.
It was definitely not the other night—the Lata night as I now call it—that was just last Sunday. Maybe it was that other time we had sex—about two months back. Sid had not been drunk that night. Yes, now that I think about it, I don’t remember having my period last month—with all the nervousness about the blogger article, Dragon and that box, I’d completely forgotten that I’d missed it.
Dragon! I try and imagine what her expression will be when I tell her about the baby—and my nervousness about Sid’s reaction vanishes.
