Joanna stared at the ceiling, trying to decide what tickled her fancy more. Was it the fact in a few weeks she’d be marrying a woman, or was it because, at the ripe old age of twenty-eight, she had absolutely no idea what the word wealthy really meant?
Lost in her thoughts, Joanna continued to titter to herself until she heard a tap on the door frame. Looking over, she saw Evelyn smiling back at her.
“All settled in?” Evelyn asked.
“There wasn’t much for me to do,” Joanna said, sitting up. “It seems someone already unpacked for me.”
“That would have been Sally. I hope she got everything in order.”
“Everything’s fine, but I could have done it myself.”
“It’s part of her job, and trust me, she enjoyed doing it,” Evelyn said. “I wanted to let you know that dinner will be ready shortly. I wasn’t sure if your father had any special dietary needs, and since we didn’t know your likes or dislikes, we’ll be having something simple.”
“That’s fine, but honestly, I’m not sure Dad will be ready to go back downstairs again.”
“Yes, he did look worn out.”
“Well, between you and me, I think it has something to do with the scotch he was drinking in the car, but he doesn’t get out much. I’m sure between the ride and the walking, he overdid it a bit.”
“I have an idea,” Evelyn said, stepping into the room. “How about I have dinner brought up here instead? And if you don’t mind, I’ll join you, and we can all get to know one another a little better while we eat.”
“I don’t want you to go to any trouble.”
“It’s no trouble at all, I assure you,” Evelyn said. “So, are you still interested in touring the house?”
“Yes, I am,” Joanna said, springing from the bed. “I want to see everything there is.”
“Well, I can’t guarantee that, but you’ll see most of it,” Evelyn said, walking from the room. “Follow me.”
Exiting the wing, Evelyn stopped and pointed to a set of doors nearly fifty feet from where they were standing. “Those lead to the west wing. It’s almost identical in size and shape to yours, but I’m afraid it hasn’t been lived in for years. I thought we’d just skip the mess if that’s okay with you.”
“That’s fine.”
Gesturing to another set of doors directly opposite the stairs, Evelyn said, “Those lead to the master suite. As I’m sure you’re aware, Addison isn’t taking any of this very well, so I think it best we not trample on her privacy.”
“Good plan,” Joanna said, her eyes creasing at the corner. “So, I guess that means we’re heading downstairs,” she said, taking a step in that direction.
