Looking over her shoulder at the two junior admins, Fran moved closer to Millie’s desk. “He’s one of the managers at Garrard. I’ve made arrangements for him to bring over some rings for Addison to look at.”

“Oh, I see,” Millie said as she returned to the calendar and quickly blocked out the time. “Does she know?”

“Not yet. That’s why I’m here. Is she in a meeting?”

“No, she’s alone. She just finished a conference call. Go on in.”

“Thanks.”

Fran made her way across the expansive outer office, and after lightly tapping on Addison’s door, she sashayed in wearing the best smile she owned.

“What the hell do you have on?” Addison said, tossing her pen on the desk.

Fran looked down at her vest, jeans, and trainers. “Relax, I’m not working in the office today.”

“And why not?”

“Because I’m taking your fiancée for the physical you demanded she have, and then I’m going to help get her affairs in order.”

“Who made you her BFF?”

“No one, but since she doesn’t have a car, and we all agreed last night that I’d handle her creditors, this will give Joanna and I some time to go through everything. That is unless you want her to get her own lawyer?”

“Of course not, the fewer people involved in this, the better.”

“Good, then you won’t mind if I’m not in the office today.”

Exhaling slowly, Addison said, “No, I suppose not. Do what you have to.”

“Thanks,” Fran said, walking over and taking a seat. “And speaking of things that need to be done, I’ve filled up your diary for today.”

Addison’s entire body went rigid, and she slowly raised her eyes to meet Fran’s. “Sorry?”

“I’ve arranged for one of the managers of Garrard to stop by. Millie penciled him in at eleven.”

“What the hell do I need a jeweler for?”

“Because you’re getting married and that normally means an engagement ring and wedding bands, neither of which you have.”

“If you think—”

“What I think is that once Joanna is out and about again, the press will be extremely interested if the wife of one of the richest women in this country isn’t wearing an engagement ring, let alone a wedding band. Now, can you please do us all a favor and stop arguing every bloody point of this marriage. It may be in name only, but you need to make sure it doesn’t look that way. You and I both know people are watching.”

“I don’t know her ring size,” Addison said, rocking back in her chair.

“Oh, Jesus Christ!” Fran said, getting to her feet. “Just pick something out, and we’ll get it sized later, but when she walks into the registry office tomorrow, she’s walking in as the fiancée of Addison Kane. Remember that.”
