“I should have never allowed you to do this,” Addison said, staring at the floor. “We should have hired a surrogate.”

“What? Why?”

“Because you shouldn’t have to be sick every day—”

“I thought you wanted a child.”

“I-I-I do, but I can’t handle seeing you like this, Joanna. You’re pale, and you aren’t eating properly!”

“How would you know?”

“What?”

“Unless I’m mistaken, you weren’t at dinner last night. Come to think of it, you’ve missed three in the past week.”

“I know, and I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be,” Joanna said as she shifted on the bed. Rearranging the pillows behind her back, she gave the one on top a swift, solid punch before turning back around. “I’m becoming used to it.”

Addison sighed, hanging her head for a moment before she approached the bed. “Look, I am sorry, but it seems like everything I’ve been working on for the past year is all coming to a head at the same time. Imagine a...a car crash with the occupants being contracts and negotiations because that’s exactly what I’m going through right now.”

“Sounds hectic.”

“It is,” Addison said, sitting on the edge of the bed. “But it’s what I do.”

“I know. It’s just that you’ve been doing it a lot lately.”

“I don’t know what else to say other than I’m sorry,” Addison said. “But I’m here now, and we have the weekend together. That should count for something, shouldn’t it?”

“You said that last weekend, but you spent half of Sunday on a conference call.”

Addison let out a sigh. “I know, but it was important.”

“Of course, it was,” Joanna said, crossing her arms.

“Joanna, please, it’s Saturday, and we have the entire weekend ahead of us.” When Joanna’s pout didn’t waver, Addison took her hand. “I know I’ve been a bit distant, but I’m just worried about you. That’s all.”

“You sure you’re not worried about what you’re going to do when the baby’s born?”

“It’s on my mind, yes.”

“Jesus Christ,” Joanna said under her breath.

“I’m being honest, damn it. You can’t have it both ways, woman. If you want me to be honest, then you need to be prepared for just that, but I’ve got the weekend off with no calls scheduled. So, we can either spend two days arguing...or two days shopping.”

“What?”

“I’ve lost count of the hints you’ve dropped about the nursery, so why don’t we go shopping. If I know you, you’ve got a list of places you’d like to visit, so why don’t we?”

“Do you mean it?” Joanna said as she sat upright.

“Yes, we’ll make a day of it. How’s that?”

Joanna scrambled to get out of bed. “I need twenty minutes.”
