True to her word, Addison wasn’t tired, so for almost an hour she played a drunken game of grab-anything-you-can while Luce tried to clean up the blood on her face. Half-way between amused and annoyed at the woman’s overactive libido, Luce decided to take a different tack. If Addison wanted sex, she’d have to shower first.
Thankful upscale hotels had bathrooms to match, in a shower large enough to hold four, Luce gave Addison a much-needed wash. Between the grab rails and a built-in seat, Addison was safe from harm, but Luce wasn’t as lucky. For the next twenty minutes, Addison’s libido reigned supreme again, and Luce spent as much of her time washing Addison as she did warding off the woman’s sloppy gropes. The good news was after cleaning up the blood, Luce decided Addison’s nose was still as straight as ever, but the bad news was Addison had suddenly gone quiet. The playful pinches had stopped, as did the lopsided drunken leers, and when they exited the shower, Addison obediently allowed Luce to towel her dry without saying a word.
She escorted Addison back to bed, and after tucking the blankets in around her, Luce said, “You ready to call it a night?”
“I’m not tired.”
“Okay,” Luce said, letting out a sigh. “You hungry?”
“No,” Addison said, staring at the bedcovers.
“How about some tea?”
Addison mindlessly traced her finger over the floral designs on the bedspread, but after a few seconds, she raised her eyes. “Do you think I’m an uncaring bitch?”
Luce did her best to hold back a laugh. “You have your moments.”
Even in Addison’s drunken state, Luce thought her reply would have at the very least made the woman grin in return, but seeing a pained look cross Addison’s face, Luce sat down on the edge of the bed and gently placed her hand on Addison’s leg. “Why did you ask that?”
“No reason,” Addison said as she returned to mindlessly picking at the blanket.
It was Luce’s turn to frown. It was clear Addison didn’t want to talk, and while Luce was used to the woman shutting down her questions, this was different. There was no arrogance here. No spoiled brat throwing her wealthy weight around. This was sadness, and Luce was stunned. She didn’t know how to deal with a sad Addison Kane. “How about I go make that tea?” she said, getting to her feet.
Addison lifted her eyes. Watching as Luce began to walk away, she blurted, “Joanna fell the other day. No one thought to tell me.”
Luce whipped around. “What? Is she okay?”
“Evelyn said she’s fine,” Addison said, returning her focus to the bedspread.
Worry lines creased Luce’s brow, and slowly stepping over the clothes littering the floor, she sat back down on the bed. “And that bothered you? I mean, not being told.”
“Yeah.”
“Because?”
