“Good morning, Fran,” Millie said. “How are you this lovely Monday?”
“Doing well, and you?”
“As they say, can’t complain. Busy as always.”
“Well, then I won’t keep you,” Fran said as she sat down. “Several weeks ago, I sent you over some documents for Addison to sign concerning the bank accounts for Joanna and her father. Have you seen them?”
“Oh yes. I put them on Addison’s desk right away, but the last time I saw them, she had them pushed off to the side.”
Pinching the bridge of her nose, Fran let out a sigh. “Well, could you do me a favor and put them under her bloody nose, and while you’re at it, order Joanna a corporate card so if Addison decides to try to delay this any longer, at least her wife has something to use for cash.”
“Consider it done,” Millie said, smiling through the phone. “Anything else?”
“No, the rest I can handle. Thanks, Millie!”
“You’re quite welcome, Fran. Enjoy your day.”
Fran hung up the phone and frowned. “I am so sorry. I promise you I set those accounts up weeks ago, but apparently, Addison hasn’t signed the automatic transfer approvals.”
“Why am I not surprised?” Joanna said, chuckling to herself. “Wait, isn’t that going to be a problem? I mean, nothing was supposed to be written down. Right?”
“No, in this case, it’s fine. She’s a rich woman and there’s nothing saying she can’t give her wife some money of her own to spend. We’re covered.”
“Oh, okay.”
“So,” Fran said as she leaned a little closer. “You said you had two problems. What’s the other one?”
“Well, I’m fairly sure I shouldn’t be visiting thrift shops any longer, and I’m assuming that being her wife demands a certain style, but I don’t really know what that is? I thought maybe you could point me in the right direction.”
Fran pursed her lips as she thought about the question. “The problem isn’t where you need to go, it’s the fact you’re going to draw a crowd.”
“What do you mean?”
“Who brought you?”
“What?”
“David or George, and what car did they drive today?”
“Um...I brought myself.”
Fran’s mouth went slack. “What did you say?”
“I brought myself. I took the Ferrari.”
“You took...you took the Ferrari?”
Joanna lowered her chin and raised her eyes, which were twinkling like fairy lights. “It was either that or the Aston Martin.”
Fran burst out laughing, and leaning back, she pulled herself together while she collected her thoughts. “Where’s it parked?”
“I took Addison’s space. There was a sign.”
Fran continued to titter as she pondered the situation, and then suddenly she rocked forward and held out her hand. “Give me the keys.”
“What? Why?”
