  57. About the Author

“We can watch something else if you want. Saturday Night Fever? When Harry Met Sally? Home Alone 2?” This time he bumped my shoulder. “I considered American Psycho but didn’t know how comfortable you’d be watching a movie about a serial killer alone with a guy you just met.”

“Good call.” Only it didn’t feel like we’d just met. “You’ve really thought this through! Let’s watch Frances Ha.” The movie was secondary to the act of watching it with him.

“I also have…” He pulled a can of Pringles out of his bag and opened it with a POP. “Ta-da,” he said, placing a few chips in my palm. “Movie popcorn has nothing on Pringles.”

“What else do you have in there?” I asked, peering inside his bag. “Let me guess, a monkey?”

“Close.” He removed two bottles of Heineken, twisted them open, and handed one to me. “Cheers.”

I clinked my bottle against his. “Wait. Does Pleasant Hollow have any open container laws?”

Finn took a long swill from his beer. “Don’t know. Don’t care.”

I chomped on a chip. “I don’t think I’ve seen a cop since I got here. Does the town even have its own police station? A sheriff? There’s always a sheriff in the mov—” I cleared my throat. “Never mind.”

Finn cracked up. “You’re a piece of work.”

“What do you mean?” But I could tell by the expression on his face I was endeared to him. It was the fondness thing again.

He brushed a hair from my face. “I enjoy you immensely, Adina Gellar.” Then he leaned forward and kissed me softly.

The innocent closed-mouth kiss left me dizzy. I shut my eyes until the weight of his lips against mine was gone. When I opened them, Finn gestured to his laptop. “Ready?”

“Ready.” Under other circumstances, I would have been captivated by a movie featuring a young woman in New York finding her way, but…Finn enjoyed me. No one had ever said that to me before.

Kate and I always made fun of the couples in Hallmark movies who fell in love after a week. I wasn’t in love. But…what was happening here?

What we had was more than sexy times. A private movie viewing in the park definitely qualified as a PG-rated bona fide date. In addition, rather than play it cool like most of the guys I dated, Finn communicated…with words…how much he liked me. Maybe my assumptions about him seeing me as a convenient but temporary fling had been premature.

“So…uh…when do you think you’ll come back to the city next?” Real smooth, Gellar.

Finn paused the movie and turned to me. “What was that?”
