  57. About the Author

The handyman. The corners of my mouth lifted in a smile. I could now cross “follow up with Garrett” from my afternoon to-do list. “Yes. Thanks for returning my call.”

“Sorry it took so long. It’s been a busy couple of days between mold removal from the Gordons’ shower and a leaking toilet at the Smiths’ place. I’ve been crawling around in muck.”

I recoiled. TMI. “Um…sorry?” Feces and fungus. Gross. Two topics I wouldn’t raise in my interview. I shook away the visual before I dry-heaved.

“You said you were a journalist from the city?”

“That’s correct. I’m working on a story for an online magazine about the town and The Hollows. Do you live here in Pleasant Hollow?” Monica and Jennifer had implied as much, but after what happened with Davina, I’d confirm on my own, thank you very much.

“Only my entire life. I’d love to talk to you.”

I pumped my fist in the air. “Great. When are you free to meet?”

“Now would be good.”

“Meet me at the B&B in ten minutes?” After he confirmed, we ended the call.

I called out a goodbye and thank-you to my new friends, then glanced fleetingly at the office trailer. I was dying to know more about Finn’s experience with Habitat for Humanity and his “passion project.” But my work had to come first.

Chapter Fourteen

Thanks for meeting with me,” Garrett said, his front teeth sparkling like a teeth-whitening commercial come to life as he smiled at me.

I pulled the neck of my shirt away from my chest and let it snap back. It was balmy in the common room of the B&B. Or maybe it was Garrett. He was a snack in mustard-colored overalls, and his biceps strained against the long-sleeved white T-shirt he wore underneath. “No, thank you. You’re doing me a favor.” I was saved from giggling like a schoolgirl when my phone, which was resting on my thigh under the table, pinged with a text message.

Who would play him?

Kate didn’t need to clarify. I knew she meant in the movie. When Garrett had gotten up to refill his thermos of water (I found his carrying a thermos strangely fetching), I’d texted her that I’d found the single guy in town and was, at this very moment, interviewing him for my story. Finn who? I’d described Garrett as a sexy handyman, knowing Kate would respond right away, even if she was in the middle of a deposition or whatever lawyers did all day. I’d been right.

After giving him a rundown on the story I was writing, I asked my first question. “So, tell me a little bit about yourself and what you do here in Pleasant Hollow,” I said, while debating my casting choices.
