  57. About the Author

“Please, sir.”

He curled his lip.

Politeness counted for nothing with this guy. “My boyfriend is in there,” I said, pointing inside as my pulse raced. “And the problem is, he doesn’t know he’s my boyfriend because we broke up. But now I know he wants to try again, but I’m not sure he knows I want to try again too. Relationships aren’t easy. Even the great ones can be complicated. We’re one of the great ones, or we can be, if you just let me inside!” I stopped to take a breath and wiped the perspiration from my forehead.

“Why don’t you just call him?” the bouncer said, pointing at my phone.

“Oh.” I hadn’t thought of that.

“That won’t be necessary.”

Two heads, mine and the bouncer’s, turned toward the entrance, where Finn stood with my gym bag and a silly grin on his gorgeous face.

The bouncer snorted.

Finn led me to the sidewalk. “I just read your story.”

I scratched my head. “And decided to leave?”

“I was afraid you’d been kidnapped.”

I dipped my chin. “I’m sorry I was gone so long. Kate found your dating profile.”

“Again?” He bit back a smile.

“Was that what you wanted to talk to me about?” I pressed my hands to his chest, needing to touch him, but thanks to a hurried pedestrian bumping me from the side, we ended up in a hug. It was a position I had no desire to abandon, but Finn let go and motioned to the less populated strip of grass between the sidewalk and the street.

“You didn’t respond to my message.”

“I didn’t see it, on account of taking a break from dating.” I gazed at him from underneath my lashes. “I’m still not over the last guy.”

He stroked my cheek. “I’m so sorry, Adi. It took me a few days to realize how wrong I had it. My dad is a problem, but he’s not the reason I’m not boyfriend material. He didn’t force me at gunpoint to check out on you while he called you names. I should have had your back and handed him his ass on a plate for speaking to you that way. I’ll never forgive myself for that.”

I was a puddle. “What if I forgive you for both of us?”

He leaned in. “You can do that?”

I nodded. “One unfortunate event doesn’t have to mean it’s over. All I needed was for you to recognize that your dad doesn’t control your behavior, only you do.”

“I get that now.” A smile stretched across his cheeks. “You are one of a kind in all the best ways.”

My heart plumped. Then I thought of something. “How many fake Adina Gellars responded to your updated dating profile?”

He blushed. “There were quite a few impostors, in fact.”
