‘I honestly don’t know. I’d certainly talk about it and I know I’d want to try again but infidelity is infidelity and I don’t know if I could forgive and forget if push came to shove. I know how much you love Scott and I know you too well too. If you walk away now, without even discussing things, you’ll spend the rest of your life wondering what if, so I’ll admit that it’s probably the right decision for you to spend some time getting answers.’
‘I knew you’d get it.’
She sighed. ‘I get it but that doesn’t mean I like it. You’ve got two evenings together, Jem. That’s a lot of hours to talk. Use that time. Don’t tumble into bed again. Stay focused and give him a bloody hard time. He deserves it. And if, after you’ve interrogated him, you’re absolutely 100 per cent sure you have a future together, then I guess you have my support if that’s what you want.’
Relief flowed through me. ‘It is. Thank you.’
‘Please don’t be mad with me for saying this but I can’t help hoping you decide not to let him back in. I’m so sorry. I will support you but it worries me. Talking to him is the right decision for you but as to whether trying again would turn out to be the right decision, the jury’s out on that one.’
I felt deflated again. They all thought I should walk away. I didn’t want to lose my friends over this, though. Best end the conversation on something more positive. ‘How are things with you? Good week?’
‘Great. Did I tell you Ryan and Steff have got a place on the London Marathon next year?’
‘No. I remember you saying he’d entered, but I didn’t know he’d heard.’
‘Yeah, last week I think it was. He’s always wanted to do it. So has Steff.’
‘You didn’t fancy taking part? All three owners running together.’
‘Not my thing. I love running, obviously, but that distance just doesn’t do it for me. Anyway, I’ve set up a running club as a spin-off to the bootcamp and PT and it’s doing really well.’
‘World domination next?’
Karen laughed. ‘Something like that. Look, I’ve got to go. I’ve got a PT session in ten minutes. Let me know how it goes this weekend.’
‘I will. Thanks, Karen.’
‘Stay strong. Only let him back in if you’re 100 per cent convinced. If there’s even a tiny fraction of doubt…’
‘I promise. I’ll speak to you later.’
