Scott crossed the room and took my hands in his, sending a zip of electricity throughout my body. ‘Because it was only when I got away from home that my head cleared and I knew what I had to do. I could have waited until I got home again and ended it then before coming to find you, but I couldn’t bear to be away from you for another minute. I had to see you and explain. It really is over with Fi, whatever the outcome with you. I can’t continue to play happy families when my heart belongs to someone else.’
He kissed the back of my hand gently, sending another ripple of excitement through me.
‘I’m at a conference in Brighton for the next three days. If you’ll let me, I’d like to get the train up to see you tomorrow night and again on Saturday night so we can really talk. But I promise you, whatever you decide about our future, I’ll go home on Sunday and confess everything to Fi.’
‘What if it’s bad timing again? You said you’d tried to tell her before and it never worked out. What if you go home and one of the twins is poorly or your wife’s upset about something? Oh my God! What am I saying?’ I snatched my hand away. ‘You have a wife and two babies. You should be with them. Not me. This isn’t right.’
‘It’s difficult but it is right. I choose you, Jem.’ Scott led me to the sofa and sat down beside me, knees touching, hands clasped. ‘I need you and I know you need me. We’re meant to be together. It’s always been you.’
He tilted my head towards him and gently kissed my tears away. I tried to pull back but who was I kidding? I hated what he’d done but I still loved him and I still wanted him. Badly.
‘I love you, Jemma,’ he murmured, as his fingers entwined my hair and his kisses trailed round my neck.
‘I love you too,’ I whispered back as my lips found his. And I meant it. I hated myself for being so weak, but I couldn’t bear to let him go.

Jemma
‘I wish I didn’t have to go to Brighton.’ Scott grabbed the belt of my dressing gown and pulled me towards him by the front door early the following morning. ‘I’d rather stay in bed all day showing you how sorry I am.’
