‘I want to. You’ve been honest with me and I want to be the same. I’m really flattered and I know that this is a huge step for you…’ Looking at his eager expression, I hesitated. I couldn’t do it. I wasn’t ready to risk getting hurt or to hurt him. Not yet.
‘But…?’
‘I’ll admit that I felt something on the beach. We had a moment and, if Kirsty hadn’t turned up, something might have happened. But that’s all it was for me. A moment. I’d had a difficult week and you were there for me every step of the way and I was so grateful. Then you took a huge step in going to the rock pools and there was that shaft of light. It was intense and emotional and I think we both got swept up in it all. Now you’re saying you feel something more than friendship and I don’t know what to do with that.’
‘I’m not expecting you to do anything with it. Like I said, I owed you an explanation and Nikki taught me always to be honest about my feelings. I didn’t know how I felt last weekend. It had kind of crept up on me.’
I sipped on my beer while trying to find the right words. ‘I really like you, Sam, but I haven’t thought about you in that way. I don’t know if that’s because I’m still in love with Scott, or whether it’s because I never let myself think of you like that because I thought you were still in love with Nikki. I can’t believe I just said that. Of course you’re still in love with Nikki. You always will be. That’s not what I meant. Oh God, I’m making such a mess of this.’
Sam placed his hand over mine and looked into my eyes. I felt instantly comforted. ‘I know what you mean,’ he said. ‘You didn’t think I was ready to move on so it’s as though I was off limits. Like looking at a married man and knowing you can’t go there. Unless you’re Kirsty, of course, in which case you see that as an exciting challenge.’
I smiled. ‘You always say the right thing.’
‘Not always. I don’t know if telling you how I feel was the right thing.’
His hand was still holding mine. I squeezed it, trying to ignore the fizzing in my stomach. ‘You did the right thing.’
‘Just at the wrong time?’
