Karl Redet deutsch! [Speak in German!]
Friedrich Be careful with him.
Rudi What’s he going to do, shoot me?
Friedrich Yes. He would.
[But we’re further away from Paris than ever.] (He improvises map.) Deutschland. Frankreich. Belgien. France. Belgium. Switzerland. The North Sea. We came in here, through Belgium, heading for Paris. We were stopped. We dug in. Then for three years we took a little here, gave a little there; went sideways this way, sideways that – but now, there is no argument; we are definitely, indisputably heading away from Paris. [It’s military strategy. The lines remain the same along most of the front, only in some areas we are using the tactic of appearing to retreat. Deceive your foe, make them advance, bring them on to your guns, crush them.]
Rudi Ich verstehe, Herr Offizier-Stellvertreter. [I see, sir.]
Karl Sie verstehen? Gut. [You see? Good.]
Rudi (to Friedrich) He’s a Kaiser’s man, all right.
Karl (to Friedrich) Was hat er gerade vom Kaiser gesagt? [What did he just say about the Kaiser?]
Friedrich Lang lebe der Kaiser. [Long live the Kaiser.]
Karl Ich verstehe. [I see.]
Rudi Those acting officers; they’re the worst. Have you heard the rumours from home?
Friedrich No?
Rudi Unrest.
Friedrich What sort of unrest?
Rudi Unrest to do with wanting this war to stop.
Friedrich Unrest in Schleiden?
Rudi Unrest everywhere. They’re saying we’re not going to win this war. They’re saying that because we attacked, we’re paying for it. They’re saying that we must get rid of the Kaiser and make a democracy. It would be impossible for a democracy to start a war, continue a war against the will of its people. What do you think?
Karl Hört auf Englisch zu reden! Ich verlange zu wissen was ihr redet! [Stop speaking English! I demand to know what you are saying!]
Joey and Topthorn play.
Friedrich (trying to defuse) Schaut! Look at them, just living for this instant. Sunshine, birds. Nature! They make you smile, too, you see? Like children, they –]
Joey sees Topthorn is panting. His breath is short and rasping. Topthorn falls. He lifts his head to look at Joey.
