Karl Zieht! Zieht! Kommt schon ihr Viecher. Zieht! [Pull! Pull! Come on you shits. Pull!]

Friedrich conceals his presence. Paulette wants to flee with Emilie but without Karl seeing them.

Ich brauche diese Tiere. Wer passt auf diese Pferde auf. [I need those animals. Who is in charge of these horses?]

Friedrich must reveal himself before it appears strange that he hasn’t.

Friedrich (pulling his collar up and his hat down low) Verwundetentransport, Herr Offizier-Stellvertreter! Die sind nicht vom Kanonenzug, Herr Offizier-Stellvertreter. [Transporting wounded, sir. They’re not gun team, sir.]

Eager to get away, Friedrich begins to position Joey and Topthorn for the ambulance.

Karl Wer sind Sie? [Who are you?]

Friedrich Soldat Muller, Herr Offizier-Stellvertreter. [Private Muller, sir.]

Karl Ihr Krankenwagen ist leer, Soldat. Wenn sie den hier ziehen können, ziehen sie auch das. Diese Kanone müss an die Front. Spannen Sie sie vor die Kanonen [Your ambulance is empty, Private. And if they can pull that, they can pull this. We need to get this gun to the front. Harness them.]

Friedrich Befehle. [Orders.]

Karl Einen Krankenwagen ohne Kranke?! [To drive an ambulance with no men in it?!]

Friedrich Befehle. [Orders.]

Karl Arschloch! [Bastard!]

Karl gives up trying to get the horses.

The horses play up.

Friedrich (to horses) Not now, boys.

Karl War das Englisch? Haben Sie da gerade Englisch mit ihnen geredet? [Was that English? Did you just speak to them in English?]

Friedrich Englisch? Nein. [English? No.]

The ambulance is ready to go. Emilie reveals herself to the scary man.

Emilie Calm down, Joey.

Karl’s ears prick up. Friedrich has also heard Emilie. He tries not to rush.

Paulette Papiers!

Karl Ja, ja, ja. Sehr gut. [Yes, yes, yes. Very good.]

Karl gives them a cursory glance.

Was war das das, kleine Mädchen? [What was that, little girl?]

He controls the placing of Paulette and Emilie – away from their escape route into the house.

Karl’s got two clues about Friedrich now and he senses he might get the horses.

Friedrich’s still trying not to rush, but he’s flustered.

Karl takes out Ned’s knife and shows it to Friedrich.

Paulette fears she and Emilie are caught, about to witness a horror. Exit both.

Hab ich einem Tommy abgenommen. Er hat’s gezogen, ich hab’s ihm reingestocken. Schon mal so ein Messer gesehen? [Took this off a Tommy. He drew it, I stuck it in him. Ever seen a knife like it?]

Friedrich Nein.

Karl leaves Friedrich alone again. Friedrich is ready to go but he’s bewildered – what’s Karl up to?

Karl Worauf warten Sie? [What are you waiting for?]

Friedrich has no choice but to leave – which is what he initially wanted, but Karl has him in disarray.

Hauptmann?

Friedrich Ja? [Yes?]

Karl jabs his gun at Friedrich.

Karl Mütze ab … schauen Sie mich an … Hauptmann. Was zum Teufel geht hier vor? … Erklären Sie … wieso kämpfen Sie nicht? [Remove your hat … Look at me … Captain. What the hell is going on? … Explain yourself … Why aren’t you fighting?]
