- Meet Melissa
Tank stepped in front of Tobias and said, “I’m real sorry about the shit you’ve gone through and for the way we came at you. We’ve all lost people we loved. If you need an ear, Leah and I are here for you.”
Tobias’s emotions were taking a beating tonight, and he couldn’t be more grateful. “Thanks, Tank. I appreciate it.”
Tank nodded curtly and motioned for Tobias to climb into the truck. He did, and Tank waited for Blaine to climb in before joining them and closing the tailgate. Maverick banged on the hood of the cab, and the truck rolled down the street.
On the way, Tobias learned that Conroy was driving, and Justice, Cuffs, and Sid’s father, who went by the road name Colonel, were at the Salty Hog in case those assholes came back. Preacher and his father were meeting them at Conroy and Ginger’s house with a gift for Tank and Leah’s girls. They were like a well-oiled machine. The way they had each other’s backs and the respect for their hierarchy were impressive. Tobias felt proud and grateful to be included.
Preacher and Mike were waiting at the end of Conroy’s street in Preacher’s truck, and they pulled out in front of Conroy. Both men cut the headlights as they rolled up to the curb in front of Conroy and Ginger’s rambling two-story, situated on a sweet piece of private property.
The guys shushed each other as they all jumped out, and Tank, Baz, Blaine, and Zeke hopped into the back of Preacher’s truck, lifting a child’s pink ride-on truck with massive wheels and all the bells and whistles. They handed it down to Preacher, Conroy, Zander, and Gunner, and Tobias saw a big stuffed bear in the driver’s seat wearing a Dark Knights T-shirt.
Holy shit. Now, that’s a gift.
Tobias wished he’d known he was coming. He didn’t have a gift for the shower, but he was glad to be there, and when he saw Madigan’s Jeep in the driveway, he felt himself smiling. He couldn’t wait to see her.
Mike sidled up to him and said, “Glad you and Blaine got your heads out of your asses.”
Tobias didn’t know what to say to that, so he simply nodded.
“Zeke installed a camera on the front of the truck and rigged the remote control up to Tank’s phone,” Zander whispered.
Preacher put his finger over his lips, shushing them.
The little pink truck led the way toward the backyard, followed by Preacher, Conroy, Mike, and Tank, who was controlling it with his phone. Tobias and the others trailed behind.
