“Tobias!” Madigan cried.
Ignoring her plea, he grabbed the guy by the shirt, seething, “How did you know I was with her? How did you know we were here?”
The guy’s panicked eyes widened, words tumbling fast through blood-streaked lips. “My buddy saw you and called me.”
“We had eyes on him for two weeks after that first incident,” Zeke said. “He never came near you or Madigan.”
Blaine inserted himself between Tobias and the bloody asshole. “Back off, Tobias. Zeke, get that asshole out of here now.”
As Zeke dragged the guy out of the room, Tobias fumed, pacing.
“It’s okay, man,” Blaine reassured him.
“No, it’s fucking not okay. When he hit the ground, I thought he was Kevin. I don’t get it. I got in fights in the pen, and that never happened. What the hell was that?”
“In prison you weren’t protecting someone you loved,” Blaine pointed out. “Your sister. Mads. I think that’s your trigger.”
“You have to find a way to deal with what happened and forgive yourself, or it’ll always haunt you,” Madigan pleaded.
“She’s right. Just look at all the shit I was holding in. It nearly ruined my relationship with Mads and everyone else.” Blaine stepped into Tobias’s path, stopping him from pacing. “You gave me damn good advice that I took too long to follow. Now it’s my turn. Don’t waste another day, man. You’ve got to face your demons, or they’ll eat you alive and ruin every relationship you ever have.”
Madigan’s song came back to him. When you realize you’re the source of your pain, will you make enough adjustments to make a change?
His heart thundered, anxiety flaring in his chest at the prospect of facing his sister.
This is the hard part, knock you on your ass.
The hope and plea in his angel’s blue eyes told him he needed to do this, or walk away forever.
He headed for the door.
“Tobias, where are you going?” Madigan asked shakily.
“To face my demons.”
“You need keys to the Jeep.” She grabbed her bag and rummaged through it.
Blaine put his keys in Tobias’s hand. “Take my bike. I’ve got Mads.”
Chapter Twenty-Two
TOBIAS’S CHEST FELT like a tangle of red-hot barbed wire, tightening with every breath. He looked in the rearview mirror as he drove into Bourne. The two motorcycles that had been tailing him for the past forty minutes were still there. Nobody rides alone in this family…We’ll have your back even when you don’t need it. Emotions stacked up inside him as the bridge came into view.
