  67. Book Club Discussion Questions

‘Don’t be too long—extra crew will be here soon to set up for the key ceremony.’

‘The toilet off the laundry is probably the safest place,’ Hanna says.

‘Thanks.’ Bonnie rushes off to find privacy, her heart pounding in anticipation.

She closes the toilet door behind her and sees her hands are a bit shaky as her fingers touch the screen. She logs into her Facebook account and taps the search bar, trying to put the word ‘stalker’ out of her head as she types in Sophie Nix. Oliver has an account but doesn’t ever update it. She takes a deep breath. It only takes a moment to load. Sophie’s profile comes up straight away. She should have guessed it’d be public. Sophie would probably be totally comfortable with complete strangers gawking through her page.

Her profile picture is a selfie of her in a bikini at the beach. Sophie would fit right in here at The One mansion. She’d do yoga, openly flirt with Ty and get drunk with the other girls. Bonnie should be the one at home in her trackies, pregnant and snuggling up with Oliver on the lounge.

But she’s not.

Bonnie has to clear her throat a little, fearful it might squeeze out the last of her breath and she’ll find herself crying again. She knows the whole show is built around these high emotions—twenty-two girls fixated on one guy, all living in close proximity—but Bonnie wonders if they add to it somehow by pumping oestrogen through the air vents, ensuring they’re all extra emotional and grumpy and sensitive to comments they wouldn’t normally be.

Bonnie scrolls down the page. Sophie’s posted a series of photos over the last couple of weeks. There’s a photo of a dozen red roses with the caption Roses from my man, just because.

Bonnie’s stomach curdles.

Another photo shows Sophie’s been shopping at Whisper of Lace, the local lingerie shop. It’s captioned Shhhh … someone’s getting lucky tonight!

For Bonnie, the picture of the shopping bag is even worse than seeing Sophie’s new underwear. Bonnie’s mind is instantly filled with skimpy crotchless lingerie bought specifically for Ollie.

She scrolls down a little further to a photo of Sophie and Oliver. They’re walking along the beach and the sun must have been hanging low because part of the photo is blown out. But Bonnie can still clearly see Oliver’s arm wrapped around Sophie, protective and loving. There’s something about the way their bodies lean into each other that indicates a bond no one can break. The caption reads So blissfully happy. But Bonnie knows more than she should. She knows it means Having a baby with this man.
