- Book Club Discussion Questions
Katie and Hanna are huddled together, an urgent look flashing between them. Bonnie guesses they’re talking about the salsa dancing group date they both went on yesterday. Did one of them kiss Ty? Maybe one of them bitched to Ty about one of the other girls. Maybe about Bonnie. Being in the mansion is making her paranoid. She knew the girls had been jealous she got the first one-on-one date. Some were outright annoyed she hadn’t gone into detail about her time with Ty. She’d taken Darcy’s advice and hadn’t told anyone she kissed him. She knows they’re all a bit threatened that Ty seems to like her, even she can tell that much. She just doesn’t know whether he likes her the most. And if she’s honest, Bonnie still has to figure out if she likes Ty the most. None of the girls know she spends most of her days obsessively thinking about an ex-boyfriend who is engaged to someone else.
‘Thank goodness,’ Katie says. ‘We thought you might be one of the crew.’
Bonnie shakes her head, still trying to gauge their moods and figure out what’s going on. ‘Just me. Why?’
The two girls exchange a look, clearly deciding through raised eyebrows whether or not they should tell Bonnie. Hanna shrugs as if to say, ‘Why not?’
‘We have a phone,’ Katie says in a hushed voice, then reveals the shiny silver phone that she’s hidden under a tea towel.
Bonnie feels her eyes widen. All technical devices and any form of communication with the outside world are banned during their time on The One. There was a strict signing in of all devices and bag searches before entering the house.
‘Where did you get it from?’
Another look passes between the girls before Katie admits, ‘I got it from one of the crewmembers.’
‘You don’t want to know what she had to do to get it,’ Hanna adds cheekily.
Katie throws Hanna a reproachful look.
Bonnie wonders why they desperately need a phone in the first place. Sure, it’s frustrating having no contact, but it’s a pretty big risk using it. If they got caught they’d get kicked out. She wants to know what’s going on back home for them to risk it.
‘You can keep a secret, can’t you?’ Katie asks.
Bonnie nods; she isn’t interested in dobbing on them. ‘Yeah, sure,’ she reassures them and reaches for the kettle.
‘Do you want a quick turn?’
Bonnie doesn’t realise what they’re asking at first but Katie gestures for her to take the mobile. She’d love to talk to Paige, but it’d be impossible for them to have a quick conversation and she’s not even tempted to contact Carla, who wouldn’t be able to keep it a secret. But then Bonnie surprises herself by reaching out to take the phone.
