  67. Book Club Discussion Questions

She stares through the monitor at Ty and Bonnie. Darcy has to admire the art department’s ability to create romance. In the background fairy lights twinkle, candles flicker, rose petals have been sprinkled on the grass. It looks magical, a setting ready for this couple to start falling in love, not for them to be reliving relationships past. But then again, maybe they’re bonding over this heartache. Darcy’s unsure whether she should redirect the conversation to something else. They’re always briefed on what should and shouldn’t be discussed, but here in the moment it’s harder to categorise.

Bonnie’s hands twist in her lap. Darcy can tell she feels awkward talking about her previous relationships. Darcy wonders what types of guys she’s dated before. She’s taken an immediate liking to Bonnie, who seems somewhat like a fish out of water in The One mansion.

‘Sometimes it’s hard to know if you’ll ever recover,’ Bonnie murmurs, glancing up to the hero of the show, her face wearing the pain of heartache.

‘Cut!’ Darcy calls, fearful Bonnie’s about to burst into tears. She approaches, trying to sound casual about the situation. ‘I think you’ve gotten a bit off track?’ It’s too early in the season for them to get into heavy relationship history. This kind of conversation is best saved for the final weeks.

They look at her, wide-eyed and open-mouthed. ‘Sorry,’ Ty says. ‘I thought you wanted serious stuff?’

Bonnie looks like she’s gotten into trouble from a teacher.

Darcy feels guilty for interrupting but knows they’re wasting precious shooting time talking about something that Alice won’t want aired. ‘How about you talk about …’ She pauses, realising she should have figured out what direction she wanted them to take before interrupting them. ‘Everything happening for a reason,’ she says, thinking on her feet, but immediately pleased.

Bonnie and Ty both appear to have lost a bit of momentum at having their ‘scene’ interrupted.

‘Maybe you could go in for a kiss?’ Darcy suggests lightly. Four seasons in and she still can’t believe her job entails suggesting people kiss. A kiss on the first one-on-one date would set the bar high. Alice might even be mildly impressed. Darcy had stressed to Mel how important physical contact is, to always encourage Ty to sit as close as possible to the girls. ‘Create intimacy!’ Alice barks whenever giving date instructions.

‘A kiss?’ Bonnie echoes.

‘You’ve got a connection. It’s so clear on screen,’ Darcy tells them, pointing to the monitor, knowing they need a push. There’s already a fair bit of support for Bonnie online, mostly due to the way the editors put together their ‘meet’. A bit of a slow-motion walk, a dip of charged silence before a surge of romantic music. A kiss on the first date will probably make her a fan favourite.
