- Book Club Discussion Questions
Bonnie is well aware that her sister will try to make things as awkward as she possibly can for Oliver. In Carla’s mind, an engaged man shouldn’t visit his ex-girlfriend, and if Bonnie is completely honest with herself she knows Oliver shouldn’t be here because it offers her some kind of hope that they still somehow have a future together.
‘Yeah, thanks.’ He stares at the floor.
Carla’s fake smile only just manages to hold on through gritted teeth. It’s lucky she doesn’t know Oliver and Sophie now have a baby on the way. Carla turns to Bonnie, making a big show of looking at her watch. ‘Shouldn’t you be locking up?’
Oliver quickly responds to Carla’s not-so-subtle hint. ‘I’ll leave you to it.’
It’s not even worth throwing Carla a look; nothing will make her ease off.
Bonnie hates how formal it feels between them and drops her gaze, crossing to the door. He follows, but doesn’t reach for it like she expected him to. Instead he just takes a moment to study her face. ‘Will I see you before you go away?’
Bonnie wants to say yes, of course she wants to see him again, but that would be stupid. She should be concentrating on forgetting about her feelings for Oliver, not looking forward to seeing him again.
‘Look what I got for you to take away.’ Carla, clearly having overheard his question, calls their attention back. She’s holding up a very small piece of lingerie. Something Bonnie would never in a million years consider buying.
‘Carla!’ Bonnie’s voice is shrill. It’s blatantly clear her younger sister is trying to rile Oliver, who makes a pained noise in his throat.
‘What? You’d look amazing in this. Wouldn’t she, Oliver?’ She’s daring him to answer.
He looks between the two sisters, clearly aware any answer he provides will be the wrong one.
Bonnie turns her back to Carla. ‘Good luck with everything,’ she tells Oliver quietly. ‘You’ll make an amazing dad.’ Husband too, but she doesn’t allow herself the chance to fully think about that.
‘Thanks,’ he says, but then shakes his head, seemingly frustrated that not only do they have an audience for their farewell, things between them have gone from steamy hot to tepid formalities.
Bonnie wishes she could tell him how she longs to be in his arms, how she needs his lips on her own, that she wants more than anything to wrap her legs around his body. But instead she says, ‘Bye, Ollie.’
He can barely smile as he murmurs goodbye and then walks out of her studio, and out of her life.
