- Book Club Discussion Questions
‘Sophie called me,’ Oliver says before Bonnie’s had the chance to answer his question. ‘She said you’re going out of town for a couple of months?’ He fails to mention that the reason Sophie called is that Bonnie won’t be able to photograph their wedding.
‘An opportunity came up and I’ve decided to take it,’ Bonnie says, rather formally, like he’s a client rather than … well, she doesn’t actually know what he is to her. An ex-boyfriend, an almost lover?
Oliver cocks his head to the side, full of doubt. ‘Really?’
There’s part of Bonnie that wants to break down and tell him how devastated she is. But tears will flow if she describes the future she’d imagined with him by her side and that wouldn’t be fair on him. He’s going to be a father and should be feeling excited and happy, not guilty for going back on what he’d promised her. So, she takes a deep breath and keeps up an icy wall. ‘I explained this to Sophie. I’ve given her the names of other photographers who can shoot your wedding.’
‘I’m not here because of the wedding.’
She knows that.
‘I really am sorry,’ Oliver says. ‘I thought she was taking the pill. I didn’t realise she’d decided to “give her body a break”.’ He quotes Sophie.
‘Please.’ Bonnie grimaces, needing him to stop. ‘I don’t need to know about your contraception.’
His face flushes with distress. ‘My feelings for you haven’t changed,’ he begins.
But Bonnie quickly shuts it down. ‘Don’t.’ Her voice is firm. ‘Your fiancée is pregnant. There’s nothing left to say.’ The fact that she’d been floating, flying, dreaming of her future with him doesn’t matter now.
Oliver clears his throat, a little awkward that she’s resolutely keeping a distance between them. ‘Are you going to tell me where you’re going?’ he finally asks.
She considers, the words are on the tip of her tongue, but she can’t bring herself to tell him the truth. ‘I’ve lined up some work,’ she lies.
He accepts this but his face falls. ‘You don’t need to go away.’
Does he really think they can co-exist in the same town, him having a baby with someone else and Bonnie having … her business?
‘Stay?’ he suggests lightly.
‘No,’ she cuts over him quickly, terrified of where the conversation could go.
The door pushes open and Carla bustles in, her arms loaded with shopping bags. ‘You should see what I got you.’ She’s grinning wide, but stops short at seeing Oliver. ‘Oliver, hi.’ Her words are sour.
Oliver takes a step back from Bonnie. ‘Hi, Carla.’
‘Congrats on the engagement. I hear your wedding is coming up?’
