‘And now I just don’t know what to do about the wedding.’ Sophie sighs dramatically. ‘I don’t know if the dress I bought will fit me in a couple of months, so maybe we should wait and have the wedding in a year? It would be nice to have the baby in the photos, wouldn’t it?’ Sophie, light and breezy about their predicament, looks to Bonnie as though seeking professional advice.
‘Quite the decision,’ Bonnie finally manages.
‘What do you think? You’re an expert on weddings.’
Except for the fact that Bonnie has never gotten close to having her own.
She wants to slam her face against the nearby brick wall. She can’t be talking about this. ‘Personal preference, I guess.’ Her voice wavers. She isn’t going to survive through much more of this conversation.
‘Sophie, don’t hassle Bonnie about it,’ Oliver says.
‘What? I just want her opinion. I’ve tried talking to you about it, but you’ve barely said two words.’ She turns back to Bonnie. ‘Poor thing is still getting his head around having a B-A-B-Y.’ She grins, amused, and rests her hand on her flat tummy as though it’s bulging.
Bonnie fights the urge to blink, fearful that tears will spill over.
Thankfully Sophie’s mobile sitting on the tabletop comes to life. She grabs it quickly. ‘It’s Mum—she’s probably checking up on how I’m feeling. Worst morning sickness ever,’ she declares happily, unaware that true morning sickness doesn’t leave you smiling. She steps away. ‘Hi Mum …’
‘I’m sorry,’ Oliver says quickly, standing to be on Bonnie’s level. His hand reaches out to her but she swats it away.
‘Don’t be ridiculous,’ Bonnie hisses, somewhat surprised at how angry she sounds. But how can he try to make physical contact when his pregnant fiancée is only metres away?
‘Sorry,’ he whispers, completely heartfelt. ‘When I left you yesterday I wanted my life to be with you, I did, but this …’ He shakes his head, somewhat lost for words.
It crushes her hard and fast. ‘Yep, I get it,’ she says quickly. ‘It changes everything.’
‘I don’t know.’ Oliver looks exhausted. ‘I don’t know what to do.’
‘You’re with Sophie and you’re having a baby. You’re allowed to be happy.’
‘But I still have feelings for you …’ Oliver tapers off.
Feelings don’t win out in a situation like this. She knows Oliver well enough to be sure he’ll stand by and support his child no matter what. ‘Don’t,’ she urges. She knows a baby will tie Oliver and Sophie together for the rest of their lives. That’s exactly what happened with Liam. She gave him her heart and he went back to his ex-wife, the mother of his son. ‘I’m taking myself out of the equation.’
