She goes to turn back the other way, but it’s too late. Sophie looks up and even though she’s wearing dark glasses hiding much of her face, Bonnie knows she’s seen her. She’s queasy, wondering what Oliver has said.

‘Bonnie, hi!’ Sophie calls, her voice warm and floaty. Frustration comes flooding in. He hasn’t told her.

Oliver turns. His eyes are dull and his face is pale. She finds herself softening. Breaking up with Sophie Nix clearly isn’t an easy task.

‘We’re celebrating,’ Sophie says, a twinkle in her eye.

‘Sophie,’ Oliver begins, a little panicked.

‘Relax.’ She smiles. ‘Bonnie can keep a secret.’

Bonnie feels herself stand a little straighter.

‘We’re pregnant,’ Sophie shrills, then clasps her hands over her mouth. ‘I still can’t believe it.’ She shakes her head. ‘Pregnant, pregnant, pregnant!’

Bonnie feels all the blood drain from her face and pump to the pit of her stomach, heavy and unbearable. She can feel Oliver’s eyes on her, but she can’t look at him.

‘Champagne for Ollie, but only juice for me.’ Sophie grins, pointing to the champagne glasses.

‘Wow,’ Bonnie manages. ‘Congratulations.’ All morning her heart had been floating blissfully above the clouds like a helium balloon, but just like that a pin has pricked it. All the air rushes out quicker than she thought possible, leaving nothing but a shrivelled mess she has to shove back into her chest.

‘It was a shock,’ Oliver says quickly, seemingly needing her to know he hadn’t planned this. Bonnie can still feel him staring at her, wanting her to look at him, but she can’t. She won’t be able to hold herself together if their eyes meet.

‘You should have seen how shocked he was!’ Sophie laughs. ‘It was like he didn’t know you could fall pregnant from having sex!’

An image of Oliver and Sophie having sex jumps straight into Bonnie’s mind, making her feel like someone has their hands wrapped tightly around her throat.

‘He came home from work last night in this really weird mood. I’d had a special cake made from that new bakery on William Street and kept trying to get him to open the box. In the end I had to tear it open myself to show him the “you’re going to be a dad” icing.’

Bonnie feels sick knowing her tongue had been in Ollie’s mouth, his hand on her inner thigh, while his fiancée was waiting at home to tell him she was pregnant.

‘It was the best tasting cake I’ve ever had,’ Sophie gushes. ‘I’ll definitely have them do our wedding cake.’

Bonnie feels like she’s having an out-of-body experience, as though she’s looking down from above, watching this horrible little scene play out.
