- Book Club Discussion Questions
They probably wouldn’t be friends outside of the house, but Bonnie is becoming fond of Hanna. Bonnie nods but doubts she’ll ever breathe a word of all the tumbling thoughts that won’t stop going around in her head. There are cameras everywhere, people listening. Nothing, not even her private thoughts, feels safe.
She climbs the stairs to the bedroom. It takes her a while but she eventually finds Hanna’s bag and the phone inside. She’s about to head back downstairs to the laundry toilet when she pauses at one of the windows. She counts heads; all remaining girls are down in the pool. It’ll probably be quicker to look at the phone up here in the bedroom rather than risk walking down the stairs, then back up again. She switches the phone on and sits on the edge of her bed.
She’s been trying to focus on moving forward in her relationship with Ty, but since their horrid ‘how many kids do you want?’ conversation she’s questioning everything again. She knows there’s a connection between them, but is he really going to choose her as opposed to someone like Addison, who is twenty-six and talks constantly about wanting babies?
The phone finally comes to life. Bonnie finds the Facebook icon and logs into her account. In her search history Sophie’s name is on the top. She clicks for her page to load and feels her foot tapping as she’s forced to wait. The page loads but when she scrolls down she assumes it hasn’t refreshed. Everything looks exactly the same as last time. That was a couple of weeks ago.
She refreshes the page, yet all the content stays the same. It doesn’t make sense. Sophie usually posts on a daily basis, sometimes even an hourly basis. Why hasn’t she posted in so long? It’s puzzling and she finds herself annoyed. For a split second she wonders if Ollie and Sophie are fighting. Maybe Oliver told Sophie about kissing Bonnie … She imagines Sophie’s face twisting into terrifying anger.
Oh gosh. Poor Ollie.
Bonnie types into the search bar, taps at the screen and scrolls until she finds what she’s looking for—his mobile number listed on his business website. She taps it without even thinking through what she’s doing.
Brring, brring. Brring, brring.
Bonnie should feel nervous, but she doesn’t. She has to make sure Ollie is okay. And maybe she can offer him some hope.
Or is it hope for herself that she’s looking for?
‘Hello?’ a female voice answers the phone. But it’s not just any female, it’s the unmistakable voice of Sophie Nix. ‘Hello?’ she says again.
