- About the Author
“Next, you three are staying here with me,” he said to the three van drivers in police uniforms. “Make sure the jammers are functioning and maintain comms with the base of operations. But don’t tell them anything. I’ll update the boss as soon as we’re done.” Even though the CEO of Huntsmen Enterprises was his closest friend, it was not a conversation he looked forward to. Griffin did not accept failure well.
“Roger that,” the three men said, almost in unison, and moved away to the vehicles.
“And you two searchers are also staying here with me, at least until we put this guy down,” he said to the last two men who’d hidden in the van before the shooting started. “You’ve trained on the devices, and while it doesn’t look like rocket science, I’d still rather have you two do it, but you can’t if you’re dead.”
Barrett turned to the four remaining on his sheriff’s deputy team. “Which means you four have the top priority of getting that bastard. You up for it?” He didn’t wait for a response. “You two grab night vision and push him through the woods. If he’s still in there, he’s going to have to come out somewhere. Use the NODs to hunt him down. If he’s got some kind of night-vision device, at least now it will be a fair fight.” Directing his attention to the remaining two team members. “You two, move along the front of the homes on the right side of Arrow Drive. If you see any movement inside, break in, and search the house. All four of you, stay in contact with each other on the handheld radios and update as needed. I’ll be monitoring. Are there any questions?”
The men looked at each other, shook their heads, and turned back to their leader. Just as I thought. “Good. Happy hunting.”
Without another word, the men jogged off, the mission already first and foremost in their minds.
Okay. One last thing before I call Griffin and give him the bad news.
Barrett walked over to the pavilion and up the steps, ignoring the cries and pleas of the residents. He surveyed the crowd—parents, children, the old, the young, even a few pets—placed his hands together, and spoke truth to the people of Hidden Refuge for the first time that night.

Sam was terrified. Her mind still reeled from the last transmission Ben had sent before she’d run back inside her house. She’d instinctively turned off the hallway lights and sat on the floor of her father’s office.
