- About the Author
Barrett’s face contorted into a mask of frustration and rage, understanding dawning as to what the story portended for his next moments. The knowledge that the confrontation wouldn’t play out the way he intended infuriated him, but as Nick had discerned, Barrett didn’t care. All that mattered to him was the pain and fury and the desperate release of it that he craved.
Barrett lunged at Nick, a whirling form of violent intent and hate, and Nick pulled the trigger.

FORTY-SIX
For the first time that evening, even more so than when the bullets started flying and bodies started dropping, Zack was stunned at the sight of the man whose capture had directly led to the end of his career at the CIA. Perhaps it was the combination of adrenaline and exhaustion, but as he turned to face the Russian directly, the Glock he held trained on Griffin drifted slightly toward Belyakov. The four faceless operators reacted immediately, and before Zack realized what had happened, four dark earth-colored Belgian-made FN Mk 16 CQC assault rifles with holographic scopes were trained on his face. Jesus. You’re not winning this one.
“Now, now, gentlemen. Please lower your weapons, at least slightly. In fact, please put them on Mr. Huntsmen, as he’s the real reason for all of this. Unfortunately, he just couldn’t do his job, just like in Malta, could he?” Belyakov said with amusement as the muzzles of the assault rifles left Zack’s face for Griffin’s.
The expression on Griffin’s face reflected the same disbelief Zack felt, but as Griffin spoke, his shock transformed to anger. “It was you all this time. You were Gregory’s buyer. Where is he? I know he’s GRU,” he said, using the common acronym for the Main Intelligence Directorate of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, Russia’s premier foreign military intelligence agency. Gregory had been the facilitator for the operation and was stationed at the Russian embassy in DC.
“He’s been called back to the motherland. Sadly, you won’t be seeing him anymore.”
“Motherfucker,” Griffin muttered, and took a step toward Belyakov. The four armed men took a single step forward in unison, the sound of their boots pounding on the pavement clear even over the sound of the rotors of the Huey behind them, which had continued to slow since it had landed.
“If you move, my men will kill you, and then you’ll have no chance out of this. Do you understand me? Now stand still or die. Am I clear?”
Griffin remained silent but stayed in place.
