- About the Author
Nick looked at Sam, the suppressed Glock in his left hand, pointed at her with his right finger, and then pointed at the ground, the order to remain in place easy enough for a toddler or puppy to understand. Given the circumstances and the level of fear she felt, Sam wasn’t insulted. Her thought processes seemed to have slowed to the point that she couldn’t have formulated a sarcastic response even if she’d wanted to, and she knew it was the fear that had partially paralyzed her. Get it together, Sam. Stay calm and let Nick do what Nick apparently does.
She nodded in response, and Nick nodded back, silhouetted against the streetlights. She braced herself for what she knew came next—a violent death for another human being, albeit one that wanted to cause the residents of Hidden Refuge harm. She’d never believed in a purpose for violence until now, and the merciless realization slightly sickened her. The world should not be this way.
Nick glanced right and left and confirmed that the street was still deserted. Satisfied, he raised the suppressed Glock, sighted on the back of the guard’s head, exhaled, and fired.
Chapter Thirty-Five
Chapter
THIRTY-FIVE
Brandon Harper felt like a condemned man as he reached the end of his street, walking quietly down the middle as if he were the sheriff on the way to confront the evil outlaw who’d been terrorizing the town. Which is kind of what you’re doing, old man. He pushed the vision out of his mind and allowed the weight of the Kevlar vest that he wore and the M4 that he carried to comfort him. A Glock was tucked inside his waistband near the right front pocket, the handle protruding visibly.
He knew this was likely the last time he’d travel down this street, as he’d calculated his chances of survival to be near zero. But he’d resigned himself to whatever fate lay ahead of him because he knew that he was partially to blame for the events of the night.
