  59. About the Author

Zack had reached the blacktop of the sidewalk, and he sensed movement around him, although he couldn’t afford to look and take his eyes off Griffin. He started moving to the right, so that as Griffin came up the slope, he would be between the helicopter and Zack.

Damn. This just got interesting. He’d been right about the movement. Standing twenty feet away was a line of four men all dressed in the same black tactical gear, except their weapons were now pointed directly at him. From behind the line of shooters, the figure of another man moved from the helicopter toward them.

Griffin turned his head and saw the armed gunmen, and he glanced back at Zack with a genuine smile on his face. “I told you this might not go the way you thought, but you always believe you know better.”

Zack’s eyes moved from the men back to Griffin. “Before this party really gets started, I just want to know one thing, Griffin. What was on the laptop that was worth all of this?”

“Information, Mr. Chambers,” said a voice loudly, a sound that sent a shiver of memories falling through Zack Chambers’ mind. No. It can’t be.

But it was. The four masked shooters parted silently and effortlessly, and through the gap stepped the imposing figure of Aleksei Belyakov. “It’s good to see you again, Mr. Chambers, and I mean that sincerely. Now, like that time on the ship, let’s talk.”

Chapter Forty-Five

Chapter
FORTY-FIVE

As a former 18E, the designation for the Special Forces communications sergeant, Nick was impressed that Griffin’s men had been able to truly cut off all communications to the outside world. It was technically possible, as they’d demonstrated for the past few hours, but in suburban America it wasn’t sustainable. Then again, as he moved through the wind-whipped Virginia woods in pursuit of one of the last two remaining men who’d orchestrated the night’s events, it was irrelevant. He didn’t need to communicate with anyone, except maybe his God if the hunt went tremendously wrong.
