- About the Author
Matt shook it and paused. “I know it’s no consolation, that there were so many variables you couldn’t control, but after meeting you and reading the reports, I truly believe you did the best thing you could given the circumstances. And I’m sure your neighbors feel the same, especially that one next door.”
“I hope so,” Zack said, the weight of all that he’d done still hitting him at random moments over the past two weeks. His conscience was clear, but even then, the butcher’s bill had been high.
As the director of the CIA walked out the front door of his home, he added, “When it’s all said and done, though, there’s only one whose opinion truly matters, and he’s not talking.”
Matt stopped on the porch and turned around. “You’re wrong. He just talks in ways that are harder to understand sometimes. Like I said, your neighbors know what you are, and I guarantee they’re grateful for it.”
Zack nodded, although he still wasn’t sure. He knew that in life, his neighbors’ actions toward him from the night of the siege forward would tell the real story. So far, he thought it might be a story with a happy ending. Then again, it’s life. Happy endings are never guaranteed for anyone. Ever.
“I pray you’re right. I truly do,” Zack said, and closed the door one last time.
