- About the Author
Zack unholstered the Glock from his thigh rig, shifted it to his left hand, and moved the Range Rover as far left as he could without striking the rock wall. He kept his right hand on the steering wheel as he stuck the Glock out the window and cocked his left wrist at an angle, the pistol aimed toward the Mercedes. He opened fire, praying the loud reports would have the desired reaction. He kept firing until he saw a starburst appear on the rear passenger window, the bulletproof glass absorbing the slug. The barrage of bullets had the intended effect—the Mercedes jerked to the right to avoid further fire, which was all the room Zack needed.
He floored the accelerator once again, and the Range Rover lurched forward into the space between the Mercedes and the low rock wall. Fifty yards, Zack. Running out of pavement. He turned the wheel to the right and slammed into the left side of the Mercedes, driving the vehicle into the right half of the road where oncoming traffic would normally be.
Belyakov mumbled in Russian, and Noah said, “Better pray for all of us, Aleksei. We might need it.”
The right half of the road transitioned into a small shoulder and a dirt landscape beyond that sloped upward steeply. Zack knew Griffin and Charles were close and that his former team chief was likely losing his mind with fury, but he didn’t care. He had bigger problems—the two IEDs were only twenty yards ahead, directly in his path.
While Noah was technically the best driver on the team, Zack was no slouch behind the wheel. Rather than panic, he acted, shoving the Mercedes once more to ensure the driver remained on the right side of the road. He felt the two vehicles separate, and he tapped the brakes of the Range Rover, instantly decelerating. Like a NASCAR driver who realizes at the last moment that he can’t pass the leader, Zack waited until the Mercedes passed by him, and then he twitched the steering wheel to the right, sliding behind the Mercedes close enough to draft on him. And then Zack braced himself for the explosions.
“Nice move, Ricky Bobby!” Noah exclaimed somewhat manically, just as they reached the IEDs.
