  57. Best Day Ever

I pass through the gate and take a deep breath. There’s such comfort in this extra line of protection. I realize the guards pay little attention to who comes and goes. I mean, there are more than five hundred homes in The Cove, and so many different shifts. I’m just another blonde housewife. And I have a transponder on my car to automatically open any of the nine community gates. Even at the main gate, where I am now, the guards barely glance at those of us using the “residents’” lane.

But still, it’s nice that no one could just walk up to my door and slip me a note. Not unless they live in The Cove, or have business here. That’s why I know my anonymous notes are from people on the inside—one way or another, they have access to The Cove.

Josh used The Cove letterhead and he lives here. That’s easy. Who wrote the third note? It doesn’t matter, not really. It will all be over tomorrow.

The home is a sacred, safe place, or should be. Mine is guarded, protected by me, or by the literal guards roving our community 24/7. Poor Kylie. Her multimillion-dollar home is vulnerable, like she is. David can’t protect her, nobody can. Her anonymous note could be from just about anyone.

I close my garage door and sit for a minute in the car. David’s car isn’t here, of course, it’s now parked in front of the lovely home on Port Chelsea Place!!

He’ll be home a little earlier than usual, tonight. I know, it’s supposed to be a night to celebrate their new home, but Kylie will be distracted, anxious to read the letter. And David, focused on tomorrow’s graduation and imminent liberation, won’t mind enduring one more night of hell at home with me.

Poor guy. He thinks he has it so tough.

He has no idea what tough really is. Tough is when you lose everyone you love, one at a time.

That’s tough. Some people can’t survive it. David already admitted he couldn’t. Remember that?

You can accomplish so much in a day, if you have a plan and know how to execute it.

I’m sure you’re wondering how I kept myself from confronting David, how I was able to keep all of Kylie’s secrets to myself, especially when I had to see her at the memorial service. Especially once I saw my husband carry his mistress inside their new multimillion-dollar home. Yes, that was tough.

And I wanted to surprise you.
